I am seeking information on Kate Carpenter. Kate was married to Nathaniel Carpenter, the original owner of White Sulphur Springs(WV). After Nathaniel was killed in an indian raid, about 1750, Kate moved with her very young daughter, Frances, to Staunton, VA. Frances later married Michael Bowyer in Staunton about 1766. Michael took over White Sulphur Springs after putting in a claim for his wife's inheritance. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

I am trying to find out about John Bowyer, brother of Michael Bowyer, Jr. who owned Thornhill in Lexington. Any info about Thornhill, and John is needed. I understand that Thornhill is still there, and I would like to find out who owns it today., and what it was like when John Bowyer owned it. Also, if John Bowyer was the General John Bowyer that I read about.

You will want to look for copies of three privately published books on the Bowyers. All three are by Maryetta Francis Bowyer and the titles are:
"The Bowyers of Old Virginia 1607-1979" published by Gray Printing Fostoria Ohio
"Leaves and Branches from Bowyer Roots" publsihed by The Hubbard Co Definace, Ohio Lib congress # 84-91223
"Adam Bowyer Senior of Augusta Co, Va and of Greenbrier and Montroe Counties is West Va."

This is a "family narrative" and contains fairly detailed information on the first Bowyers in Va and their descendants. There are few source notes, so its accuracy is open to some questions, I suppose.

I came across them in trying to learn more about the origins of Joseph Boyer/Bowyer b. Augusta or Rockingham County in 1794. I found no connections and am still looking. If you come across anything, please let me know.

I did notice references in the books to Colonel John Bowyer and to Thornhill. Hope this helps.

Thank you so much for responding to my inquiry. Can you tell me more specifically how to locate these books? I am a new geneaogist, and am struggling to find out how to obtain materials. I have been on the National Archives site, and saw several things, but there too, I don't know to view the articles/publications/books that the names are in. Any help will be appreciated! sheilakline47@yahoo.com

Hi,
I wonder if you could tell me where you located the 3 books Maryetta Francis Bowyer wrote? I can get my hands on a copy of the Bowyers of Old Virgina from my aunt but we didn't know about the other 2. I am a distant cousin of Maryetta - my grandmother was Ethel Margaret Bowyer, daughter of Joseph Morris & Anna Bowyer.

thanks

Col John Bowyer did not have any children. When he died he left the Thornhill estate to my GGGGgrandmother, Mary Caldwell Bowyer who was married to Judge John White Brockenbrough. Both are burried in Stonewall Jackson Cemetery in Lexington,Va. She died on April 18, 1893, the Judge died on February 20, 1877. The live at Thornhill for several years, then swaped residences with her sister and husband for what is now a townhouse in Lexington. Thornhill fell into disrepair over the years, but has been brought back to its original condition. It was sold about two years ago for about $2,500,000. The current grounds of Thornhill is approximately five acres. The original property was several hundred acres. I visited Lexington just before Thornhill was sold, and had the opportunity to vist the house and take lots of pictures. Judge Brockenbrough and Mary's daughter, Louise Gardner Brockenbrough married Thomas Middleton Semmes, My Great Grandfather. The Association of American Boyers has published that Col. John Boyer (died 1806) had three children with his first (or second) wife, Margaret Mary Becker: Peter, John, and William Henry. His second (or first) wife listed as Magdelena Woods. It's unclear which wife came first, but I wonder if the conflicting report about having no children refers to having had no children with Magdelena (but three children with Mary Becker)?

Are you still looking for pictures of Thorn Hill, in Lexington, VA? I was there five years ago before it was sold.
