I was born in Jamaica, but from what I know our family name originated from an English descendant Ann Spence

Ann Spence of England

Tracy-Ann,

A long shot, to be sure, but I have info (that I do not entirely trust yet) that leads back to England and an Ann Spence b.1630-?, d.1673-?. Supposedly she had a son Adam by James Fitzpatrick, Duke of Monmonth, I think an illegitimate son of King Charles II of Eng. This Adam b.ca 1660 Eng., d. Jan.1734 in MD. He had a son Adam II b.ca.1689 in Somerset Co., m. Mary Irving b.ca.1687, d. 1742. His son George b. 1740 MD., m. Nancy Purnell b.1750, d. 1776.

His son John Spence is my 3gr.gf. who moved to GA about 1800. From John on we have good proof, but before George it is quite uncertain. I do not trust these lines to a royal...usually much "wishful" thinking. If so, OK, but I had just as soon not have such a connection.

Heard anything about this old Ann?

Thanks,

This reference is related to this topic.

From: "Register of Maryland's Heraldic Families, 1634 March 25th to March 25th 1935, Tercentenary of the Founding of Maryland" by Alice Norris Parrin, Sponsored by Southern Maryland Society Colonial Dames, H. G. Roebusk & Son, Baltimore, Maryland, Vol. 1 1935, Vol. 2 1938.

Volume 1, Page 338:
"Adam Spence was secretary to the nobility of England and the progenitor. He was descended from the Duke of Monmouth, James Fitzroy, son of Charles II of England. He claimed the throne and was defied by James II, who declared war. He defeated James Fitzroy and beheaded him after the Battle of Sidney Moore, 1685. His secretary became a political exile. He came to Maryland. He was granted a plantation, Londonderry, 1687. His son, Adam Spence II, b. 1736, d. 1774, acquired other property, Donn, 1755. His son was George, who acquired Snow Hill..."

This seems to state a descendancy from James of Monmouth, although the mother is not stated.

Please reply to discuss.

Scott - Is this a line that you are actively researching? It appears that these are the ancestors of John Selby Spence.

Robert,

Thanks for your reply. Yes, I am researching this line. My lineage is from:

John Spence, b. 07 Sep 1772, m. Francis Whatley
George Spence, b. ca. 1740, m. Andasia Robins
Adam Spence II, b. ca. 1689, m. Mary Irving
Adam Spence I, b. ca. 1660, m. ?Margaret Dryden

I would be pleased to discuss this line with you. Please email me directly at svsmithmd@hotmail.com.

The Adam Spence reference in Register of Maryland's Heraldic Families, cites a connection of Adam Spence I with John Fitzroy Duke of Monmouth; however, this may have been only through service and not through a blood tie? I would be grateful to discuss this family with you.

Scott,

Did you ever find out an answer on the question of Adam Spence's connection to the Duke of Monmouth? Were they related or was he just the Duke's secretary (with no relation)?

BTW, I'm descended from Adam I through Adam II, George, John, George W., and John P. Spence.

I am researching Adam Spence. I have direct lineage to an Adam Spence that immigrated to Maryland in 1680 from Scotland. Is this the same group you referred to? I have a John S. Spence (1788-1840) from Cecil County Maryland that is directly related to Adam but I cannot connect him past his father John Spence (1755-)married to Jane Morrison. I believe Adam was the grandfather of John Spence 91755-). Any possiblity your information can prove this?

Hi I was wondering if you could tell me if we are related at all. My great-grandparents moved to north carlina, wayne county, Goldsboro- Not sure about the year this happened but we have a street there named after them sorta called Spence Avenue. Its one of the main roads in the city. My grandparents had a dairy farms named hillcrest farms in the early 1900s. Anyway, if you could direct me in the right direction I would greatly appreciate it.
My grandparents names were Russel Glennwood Spence and Minnie Malloy Spence. Great-Grandfather was William Cashwell Spence.

From your list of ancestors you show that you are related through John P and George Spence. Were these from Walton County, GA? I am descended from John P. Spence through his daughter Mary Fambrough. If this is your line, I would be interested in corresponding and sharing information.

I also have a Kitchens line. Wondering if we might connect there.
Thanks.
