Hi,

I am seeking help to decipher an inscription in a family Bible. Please see attachment.

I believe it is "Mary ???ker ??????????? Jan 7th 1816.
The second unknown I think could be a district or borough in London.

Or could it be a husband and wife's names and a marriage date?

Thanks in advance,

Alan Mac.

It looks like Newtown Barry to me, which is in Ireland. The surname looks like CROKER perhaps?

Hi Debra, thank you for your reply.

I've been lost trying to reply as my post was moved to this forum.. Finally, I've got it sorted.

On looking again, I think you are correct. This now opens up more queries, as I cannot make any connection to a Mary Croker, and the Newtownbarry, Ireland is puzzling. The Bible has been handed down from ancestors with only a Scotish and English background. They emmigrated to Tasmania in 1823 and were of a strong Prostestant background.

I might post a query on the Irish boards and see what happens.

Cheers and thanks again,

Alan Mac.

Bibles were also commonly given to parents for a child at the time of birth. So this, just possibly, could indicate the birth of Mary Croker.

Now, this is a longshot, but some Ancestry family trees have a Mary Croker who goes to Australia from Ireland and marries a John O'Keefe. It might be worth looking this person up, if only to discount her from your enquiries.

Only problem is that they have her born in 1817, not 1816. However, birth years are often mis-recorded. Unfortunately my level of access limits what I can see for non-British records, so I don't know what they are using to back up their research.

Hi, thank you for your interest.

I checked the public trees for Mary Croker, b. 1817 Ireland & marrying a John O'keefe. I cannot make a connection to my ancestors, so I feel I must discount her.

I have posted queries on the Wexford, Ireland board and have had a few replies which I am following up.

Cheers, and thanks again.
