Is FTM 2012 REALLY slow?

Hi,
I have recently re-installed WinXP and now FTM 2012 is nearly unusable. Unfortunately, before I could test FTM, the mandatory update was installed. The update corrected lots of functional issues but FTM2012 launch time is now about 1.5 min. I don't have any hard times, but I believe before I made the changes, launch time was about 30 second. After launch, If I click the Sources menu, the screen is not totally populated for 1 min. 45 seconds (a REALLY long time). Is anyone having a similar issue since the update?

Sturdy2

Edit: I forgot to mention sync now takes about 4 hours!

Edit: Oct 16, 2012 Just to close the loop in this thread: My problem with a SLOW FTM is confirmed to be my old WinXP installation. Removed everything and re-installed and now there is joy in Mudville tonight. Launch time is now about 15 seconds; Time to the Source menu is now about 5 seconds; a small sync completes in about 5 minutes not hours.

Do you have the box checked to search online automatically when connected to the internet? This populates the hints in FTM and turning it off helps the speed.

Sync is just fine ... servers busy and I get the occasional busy message, but otherwise OK.

And if you want unspeedy try Vista :)

Thanks for the quick response.

Yeah, I know about Vista; been there, done that and decided to revert to XP. Not multimedia friendly but also not a memory hog and definitely more user friendly. :)

I tried clearing the search box but that made little change. My slowdown is probably 5-10 times as previous so unless others are FTM2012 users are experiencing the same issue I think my XP installation is probably the problem.

I have been running FTM 2012 on a dual core with 4 gig ram & XP sp3 since it came out. Through all the updates performance has been acceptable on my installation. On a 20k person file, sync and opening are reasonable. Open in about 30 sec and most sync's are a few minutes.

I guess it depends on what you mean by slow. I run it on an older XP machine and, yes, since the new update it does load slowly. But after loading program speed seems normal. I find that sync speed depends on how many changes I've made. What I'm most pleased about the new update is that it uses much less memory (I only have 2G RAM) and it crashes very infrequently.

I would find this thread more useful if Sturdy2 had advised his computer specs, eg RAM processor type, Windows version and file size.

These all have a profound effect on the performance of FTM.

Comments like "slow" are fairly useless as they are subjective.

Slow to do what? Start? Run a report, if so what report size etc?

Slow compared with what?

Slow is a comparative term and needs to be related to some criterion

Can we get a few facts into this thread please, otherwise it is fairly baseless opinion and not particularly helpful.

I run FTM 2012 on a 6-core machine running 64-bit Win 7 with 8 GB of RAM. Yes, the FTM application's load time does take longer after the last update. But, once it is loaded, performance has greatly improved. And, FWIW, I don't use any of the sync features.

Vista was a dog of an OS and one of Microsoft's biggest black eyes, so I would never recommend anyone go from XP to Vista. Even on older machines, Win 7 outperforms Vista. The greatest hurdle there is finding drivers for some of the older hardware. I ended up having to ditch an old scanner but that wasn't a big deal to me at the time. For most hardware, the drivers that Win 7 installs work fine.

My thanks to everyone who responded. It looks like I am the only one with a really slow system after the FTM update so my recent XP install is likely the problem and not the update. Best to all...

FTM 2012 is really slow. So much slower than 2010 that I will not use 2012 for my main files. Both versions, same computer, same files, 2012 is slower.

Mary,

I would love to upgrade to Win7 but the maker of the video board in my all-in-one Sony declined to provide drivers for Win 7. Not even the 3rd part drivers will do it.

And as for dogs, if you think Vista is bad you must never have tried Windows Me.
