I am looking for information on an Orphanage in Totowa, NJ. Possibly called Totowa Girls Home. My grandmother (and possibly 2 of her sisters) resided there.Grandmothers b-day 3/1933 so it was sometime between 1933 and 1951. Any information on residents or the facilty would be appreciated.

There is one paragraph on each of two institutions in Totowa, NJ on page 208 of the out-of-print book titled, "Adoption Agencies, Orphanages and Maternity Homes--An Historical Directory." The WorldCat data base lists 147 libraries in the U.S. (including 2 in New Jersey) that have copies of the Directory.

The institutions are Mount Saint Joseph's Orphanage and Saint Joseph's Orphan Asylum for Girls.

The Home was called Mount St Josephs Home for children It opened in 1903 as a home for boys and then in 1933 took in girls. I lived there from 1968 to 1971. It is still there and is again a home for just boys. I know you posted years ago but I hope this finds you

Surnames: Siracusa, Shay
Is this anywhere near Hackensack?

My grandmother was in a St. Joe's welfare Asylum and I have been trying to track down her father's grave and old records on my grandma. It was nearly 80 years ago and she's not remembering too much.

This sounds the closest to the name she gave me so far.

Does anyone remember a Josephine (or Guseppina) siracusa? from about 1930-1937?
