I don't think that has San Francisco newspapers? (only the Daily Alta California for the late 1800s and only a few issues)

You can request Nicholas Mertens' obituary from the San Francisco Public Library:

Did Lillian Mertens also die in San Francisco?

I'll see if I can find anything on the Sullivans...

Im quite sure she died in NY state, Westchester area. I only put the fact that Nick died in CA in case it was in the obit. I'm not even sure they had them. If they did they would be in New York. He had no family in CA. He just packed up and moved there on a lark.

If its not too much trouble may I ask you to look up two more?

Luis F. Bethencourt. D. Aug. 19 1962 buried and family in Westchester, NY. Survived by Florence, Robert, Anne and Luise

James Sullivan D. 12 May 1955, Bayonne NJ
W. Catherine C. Margaret Doris James

Thank you so much for the Sullivan Obit! I was looking for hours. Clearly when it comes to newspapers I have no idea what im doing.

I found Lillian Mertens obit at It's a free site.

There's an obituary and a detailed death notice on the same page:

Here are Luis Bethencourt's obituary AND death notice (two separate things):

Note: The obituaries aren't in alphabetical order.

You can find MANY references to the Bethencourt family at I found a photo of Luise Bethencourt, for example.

Also, I noticed you are researching the Keanes. Here's an article (top left) re: the Keanes estate (includes Florence Bethencourt as an heir.)

I'm flabbergasted. It would have taken me hours to find all of that, if not days if I managed it at all. And this helps me fill in so many missing parts of my tree. Thank you soo much!
I didn't know that death notices and obits where different. In my local paper back home people either did one or the other and they where both in the obit section so I assumed they were the same thing. Thank you for clarifying.

I'm still looking for James Sullivan's obituary.

I did find his daughter Margaret's engagement notice, along with her photo:

(I'm assuming this is his daughter, I should say!)
