Changing Media Categories on multiple media items

Changing Media Categories on multiple media items

Does FTM have the capability to change Media Categories on multiple media items at the same time. Unfortunately, for example, when you download a census record from Ancestry.com it does not post a media category. At the end of the day, I have many new census records that I want to change the category from Blank to Census category.

Does anyone know of a solution - or do I do each one at a time.

thanks,
Stever

I am not an expert, but it you go to the uncatagorized media and hold dowm your control key and make the media then right click you will see an entry "catagorize media", If you hit that it will take you to your list. It does work for me and I found that tip here.

Thanks - that seems to work. That will save me a lot of time.

This is a bug that I've reported. You can categorize multiple items by using the pull-down menu or context (right-click) menu, but you cannot use the button in the right pane to do it. Furthermore, if you are categorizing large numbers of uncategorized media, there is another bug. The speed is related to the number of items you have in the media category you're viewing (generally uncategorized). If you have say 1,000 items in your uncategorized bucket, for example, it could take several hours just to categorize a few dozen media. It's best, therefore, to stay on top of your media categorizing to avoid suffering from the bug.

Incidentally, if you synchronize with AMT and consider AMT your primary tree, you will lose all these categories if you have to download your AMT again. Heads up.

"it could take several hours just to categorize a few dozen media"
Does this not depend more on the speed of your computer? I have done "a few dozen" and it does take a bit of time, but, just a couple of minuets. I did upgrade to a new faster laptop because of FTM.

The speed of the computer certainly affects the speed, but it doesn't overcome the bug. It depends on how many media items you have in the category you're currently working in. If you were able to categorize a few dozen in a few minutes, then the number of items in that category is probably too low to suffer significantly from the bug. (The software is merely changing some text for each item in a table, so this *should* be performed in microseconds.)

I guess I am lucky in that the bug has not hit me yet. I only have 2831 media items in about 50 categories.
But I certainly wish they would fix the bug that says "Confirm that your tree is unlinked" That one happens too often. I am glad for the postings here that said do not confirm.

It has hit you, since it's taking minutes to categorize dozens of items (which should take microseconds), but you're not terribly affected. It's really noticeable when you have 2831 uncategorized media items and you start categorizing them. If you have 6000 uncategorized, it's nearly unbearably slow.
