I am looking for any information of the Horne line in Kirkwall, Orkney. This was me 3 G-Gfather who came here (Canada) with the HB Company. We have lots of information on him while he was here and still have his journal etc. but know nothing about his and his families Orkney Life.

We know that his father - Henry Horne (Horn) had a goose farm just outside of Kirkwall. We know that they were there in 1850-51 but that's about it.

His mothers name was Catherine Grant and we believe he had a brother Henry Horne.

Although we are still researching the family history there and are getting good results, we would like to know if there is any information around about the Farm, or the Horne Clan on the Orkneys.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks for the name and dates of Mary Horne. I am not sure if it's a hit or not as my research has just begun on the Scotish (Orkeny) side of things, so my information is limited for the most part. As I turn things up, I will contact you and we can see if there's a thread.

I have only one Horne in my data:
Mary Tomison Horne, b. 17 Nov 1842 at South Ronaldsay, who married on 30 Jan 1871 at Edinburgh, Henry Allan Banks b. 19 Feb 1843 at South Ronaldsay. She died 4 Nov 1879 at South Ronaldsay. Any connection??

I am attemting to find birth records for Martin and Andrew Strang whom I beleive were born somewhere in Scotland around 1820's. They emigrated to Newfoundland, Canada. Any details would be greatly appreciated. I have a census from 1871 with their surname appearing as Strange...

I saw your querie about Martin and Andrew Strang of Orkney. I too have an Strang ancestor from Orkney by the name of Maxwell, but I have nothing to connect him to any others in Scotland. He moved to Kingston, Canada where his descendants, Maxwell Strange and Dr. Orlando Sampson Strange, also lived.

I am sending this from the library and do not have my info with me (I was researching another family and decided to check out Strang/Strange). Have you checked "The Stranges of Balcaskie" by John Mayer? I have it on order but have yet to receive it. It may lead to some connections. I will send you more info later.

I have a Henry Allan Banks b Bet. 1843-1844, m Mary Horne Tomison, b 1830 d 1878-1881. I have some family history - where he is described as "of Smiddybanks" - there is an 1881 census entry for such a family.
Though I must admit I am worried about the discrepancy in birth date, though my source claims this link from a 1909 letter.

I think we may have a link! I go back another 2 generations of Tomisons. Interestingly, Mary's Grandmother is Margaret Rosie, and one of their domestic servants is a Jane S Rosie. Her Mother is Jean Horne b 1795-1796, d 9 November 1865 at the Hope

I'd love to share more data in this area, and tie this down once and for all!
