Did you really mean that your great-great-great grandfather was born in 1929? Or did you mean 1829? Swiss privacy laws are very strict. If you were looking for someone born in 1929, you would have to work through the local or cantonal civil registration authorities. If the date is 1829, it's likely a different bureaucracy, possibly the cantonal archives or the town or parish archives. Look for a web site for the cantonal archives, which will have some information for genealogists.

In either case, the odds of success are greatly increased if you can find the full name and exact date of birth from other sources, such as family records, a passport, an obituary, a tombstone, etc. In Swiss families, it frequently happens that the same baptismal names are repeated, so that many cousins end up with approximately the same names. Without the exact date of birth, it is often difficult to establish which of several births with similar names is the one you want.

Good luck with your search.

Good, you seem to have enough information to get started.

Next question, which Seewis? My old gazetteer says there are two of them, one Protestant (sometimes called Seewis im Prätigau), the other, much smaller, Catholic.

If yours is the Protestant one, you may be in luck: check the catalogue of the Family History Library (www.familysearch.org)! The protestant church records for that Seewis are available on microfilm through your local LDS Family History Center. There is also at least one microfilm of town records. Using these microfilms at your local Family History Center is definitely the least expensive alternative! The records will be in German, in an unfamiliar script, but that's all part of the hunt. Good luck!

With the Bärtsch surname, Seewis im Prättigau is the most likely. I've looked through the Seewis im Prättigau church records on microfilm and recall seeing lots of Bärtsch families there.

I have Bärtsch ancestors from Seewis im Prattigau, so we're probably distant cousins. The old vital records were microfilmed and are available if you travel to Seewis. The Bärtsch family is one of a dozen or so families that have lived in Seewis for at least 300 years. My ancestors came from the Aebli and Walser family lines.

Is your 3rd great grandfather the Stephan Bärtsch who married Maria Hitz in Grüsch on April 1 1860? He was from Seewis and she was from Seewis. The Bärtsch and Bertsch name was used interchangably in those records.

Yes Stephen is my 3rd great grandfather but I didn't have the marriage date. But 1860 would make sense because their 1st born, daughter,Ursula Bartsch was born 10 May 1861.Their 2nd born, son Felix Bartsch born 26 Apr 1864 immigrated to America in 1887.He is my 2nd great grandfather.Do not know when the spelling changed.Felix's last name may have changed to Bertsch when he immigrated. The spelling on his tombstone is Bertsch. And down from Felix it has always been spelled Bertsch. You wouldn't happen to know any info on Stephan such as if he had any siblings? Is the marriage date between Stephan and Maria correct?

The marriage record is correct as taken from the original parish register. It also contains the parents for both parties. Send me an email and I can sent you a copy of the orginal parish record. I haven't checked the records for other siblings but I do also have those records. I look forward to hearing from you.
