My grandma Lovina Nickens says we are "Cherokee, Black French, German, English Irish." She is from Nashville, TN. We all now reside in so.Calif. We see the links in TN, VA, TX, SC, NC, but are curious if anyone knows exactly who the Cherokee American Native Indians names were. And if any of you knew Lovina and her family.

You may want to contact George Jr. Nickens and his wife Mary. They have done extensive research on our family tree limb.
Their email is:
melungeon@cdepot.net

How are you related to George? George Sr. is our grandma Lovina's younger brother (now deceased). They are from Nashville.

Oral tradition says that the Nickens Cherokee blood came from the Collins in middle Tenn. The Nickens of America are all descended from Yoconahawakan aka Richard Nicken, a Virginia Indian. His descendants migrated to middle Tenn. from North Carolina after the Revolutionary War. There, as English-speaking Indian farmers many were called Melungeons. One politician defined Melungeons as "dirty Indian sneaks". Not wanting to be called either Melungeons or dirty Indian sneaks, many more palitable lineages came into being. To get a more full perspective of this phenomenon visit any of the many Melungeon web sites. James Nickens
