FTM2012 - Source Screen - Jumping cursor issue

I finally finished cleaning up my locations list (all places now reconciled) and merging duplicate people (over 3000 that had to be manually merged because the find duplicates feature doesn't include blank places of birth or death in the match criteria).

Now I am tackling the big task of cleaning up all my sources. The problem I am encountering with FTM2012 is that when I edit the source citation text field and then move to another field, the cursor jumps to a different record and/or person on the sources screen. It is a pain to try to find the correct person and source citation again each time I move from one field to another. I have over 65,000 citations so this is a huge project anyway without having to fight with the software.

Has anyone run into this issue? Any suggestions on how to work around it?

serenity,

Closing and restarting FTM2012, or even better Restart your computer.

Have done both. It seems to be something inherent in the FTM2012 software when on the SOURCES screen and have the left index set to show the sources by person rather than by source title.

I am working on the genealogy of a town, so approaching sources and research a little differently than typical single family research. I start with a specific source document (i.e. 1870 census for the town) and then key every person who appears in the town census into the tree. So for instance, I just finished the 1870 census for the town and have 278 people (so 278 citations)for the same source document. The Ancestry.com provided citation text is only bare minimum information and doesn't include all of the data on the census. I transcribe the entire census record for each person into the citation text field in FTM 2012 then move to the next person (and citation) on the census record.

Moving from person to person and field to field seems to give FTM2012 fits.

serenity,

I have no experience in using Family Tree Maker the way you are using it. That is probably why I wouldn't see that behavior. When I work on a Census Record, I work on the Household and have a set of Facts that I collect from that Census Record and cite (link) all of those facts to that one citation.

I've seen that behaviour and it is a PIA. I've found that if I tab between fields it's a little better; but not much.

I'm using Vista and Firefox.

Oh good, at least I am not alone. I have been playing with the sequence of mouse clicks needed to keep it from jumping all over the place. Got it down to four clicks before moving to next person in the person list:

1. Enter/Edit information in the Citation text field.
2. Click on the highlighted Citation in the Source citations box.
3. Click on the highlighted person in the person index.
4. Select next person in the person list.

If I miss a click or get the sequence wrong, it jumps to another record. If I try updating both the citation detail and citation text fields using the mouse to move from one to another, it will jump to a different record. YES it is a MAJOR PIA -

Have submitted numerous customer support items for various bugs and only response I get is a survey response asking me to rate the response. Never even heard from support, but they closed the ticket and ask for my opinion on service?

After spending a week cleaning up just 278 citations (working 4-5 hours per day) in FTM2012, I am switching to RootsMagic 6 - to hell with the TreeSync - it isn't worth fighting with all the bugs in FTM2012 anymore. I will just work back and forth between RM and Ancestry.com tree.
