Media items not properly attributed to owners

Back in November 2012 I had a problem with my FTM I deleted the file and downloaded a new one from Ancestry. All my photos and document were re-downloaded also. Everything on Ancestry and in my FTM works fine since that time. However, the comments and original ownership of these items disappeared. I do not have the name of the owner of the documents and photos. They appear in my tree as my documents and photos, which they are not. I have gotten some nasty email about this. It was not my intention to claim this as my research. How do I fix it? I have gome through 16 pages trying to fix it, but, the comments do not appear in FTM. (I am working on the Ancestry pages)
This is not a good way to start out the new year.

You wrote that you downloaded your tree from Ancestry.com, but the result sounds like you created a new tree at Ancestry.com by uploading an FTM 2012 file. That's the only way that the comments and "origin" information for media files would have been deleted. These things don't synchronize with Ancestry.com. If you want to preserve them, you must treat your tree at Ancestry.com as your primary tree. In the case of sync failure, you must re-download that tree from Ancestry.com. (N.B.: when you do this, you lose everything in FTM that doesn't sync with Ancestry.com. That can potentially be a lot of work, so beware.)

My experience is as Marco describes. When you download your tree from ancestry, you do not lose the data regarding who originally submitted media. When you upload a new to from FTM to ancestry, you do lose that data.

However, if you download from ancestry you will end up with a database where all of the children in random order, instead of birth order, spouse order and preferred spouse will be randomized, you will lose all notes other than person notes, and any media categories you have created will be lost...

Basically, you have to decide which is the lessor of two evils. When I add media from other trees, I have gotten in the habit of appending the description to add "Originally submitted by user-name to name-of-tree on date-submitted." In the event I lose a sync and have to upload a new tree, at least that info will be preserved, even though it will no longer be hyper-linked to the original submitter. Unless my FTM file itself is corrupt and I have no choice, I will not download another tree from ancestry to FTM as cleaning up the database is simply too difficult...

I do think the developers need to find a way to address the issue regarding the lost "credit" for media from other trees as it is becoming a source of great frustration for people.
