Surnames: SHARP / ROSS / TATUM / WOLFE / MCNEELY / BROWN / ANDERS
My family lineage:
I. Edward Sharp & Sarah McNeely (Edward is from Ballygawley, Co. Tyrone, N. Ireland)
II. Henry Sharp & Mary
III. Isaac Sharp Sr. & Elizabeth (Betsy) Ross
IV. John Sharp & Althea
V. Ewel Monroe Sharp & Florentine Victoria Brown
VI. Clarence Boyd Sharp & Cora Leona Tatum
VII. Ewuell William Sharp & Emmalee Anders (my grandparents)

I know the Sharps moved to Arkansas from the (Georgia/South Carolina/Mississipp areas) then on to Oklahoma. Some of this branch was accepted on the Cherokee Rolls as blood Cherokee. But my grandparents were not interested. I just want to know if Betsy Elizabeth Ross who married Isaac Sharp was really John Ross' sister. I know she married a Ross in the 1800's after Isaac passed away but it is never mentioned that she was married before on the history sites. Anyway the Sharp researchers seem to think that is where the Cherokee heritage came in.

I found the following on the internet. These probably are not the above Sharps but I thought it a possibility. Does anyone have any idea.

Isaac Sharp SR & Elizabeth Ross did have a son named William Richard Sharp born abt 1795. But they also had a son named:
Isaac SHARP Jr.b., Feb.23, 1805,SC -died July 14, 1881 in Perry Co. ARK, who married Margaret McKnight at St. Clair Co., Alabama on Sept. 16, 1825. They had a son named William W. SHARP who was married to an Amanda. That's all I can find in my files right now.

The Elizabeth Ross that is the sister of Chief John Ross was born on 11 June 1788. Therefore, she could not have been the person you are looking for. This information came from the Emmett Starr book. She is never mentioned as a "Betsy". Sorry, she just doesn't fit your time frame. She was married to John Golden Ross and they had William Potter Ross and several other children.

Thanks for your input. As you know sometimes birth years are not recorded properly. It's just what some one says it is. If there is a family bible, I have not seen it.
Thanks again for your ideas,
Patricia

PS: 5 of Elizabeth's great-grandchildren applied for cherokee citizenship 31 / August / 1896. The Ross, Vann, Sharp families all lived in the same area of South Carolina before they moved to Georgia. Also, John McDonald & Mary McDonald before John went to Ft. Loundon in Tennessee. The Sharps went to Anderson Co. TN before going to Alabama, Mississippi, and Arkansas and then to Oklahoma. Three Ross children lived with them in Arkansas in 1860 along the White river. To many things add up for her not to be Elizabeth Ross. But I am looking for marriage bonds. I know that John Golden Ross was born in Blount Co., Alabama. I know that family lore says our Elizabeth is John Ross' sister. But I'm looking for verifiable proof if it is to be had.

I have found two Sharps in the Emmitt Starr book, one is: Catherine Sharp, b. about 1815,(doesn't say where) married: 22 Oct, 1834, to: Jacob Blevins b. 19 May 1811 Wayne Cnty, KY and Died. 2 Sept 1868 in Laurel Fork, TN. and the other: Nancy Sharp, b. Oct 1852, Pulaski Cnty, KY married: 1 Jan 1887, Pulaski Cnty, KY to Abraham Price Minton, b. 1833 in TN/KY (not sure which). Mr. Minton's mother and Jacob Blevins were sister and brother. I have no info on either of the two sharp women.
Maybe this will help you. I hope so, I may be able to look things up a little at a time, but have only a limited amount of time a day on the computer, busy lifestyle!!!!! And I too am looking for my husband's family link to John Ross. Family Bible states he was a cousin and that after a member of the family died, William Ross came to visit and make sure the family was safe. During the time the Southern Confederate Cherokee were pilliaging and murdering Cherokee in Indian Territory, Arkansas and Missouri during the Civil War. I have found the existance of John Ross's Family Bible and if I get a chance to travel to Oklahoma sometime in the near future I will see if I can get a look at it. I hope to anyway. We do know that the family is kin. We have some really interesting strings to tie together, also. Good luck. Oh, there is another book, not sure of the title, has something to do with: "Honorable William P(otter) Ross", editited by Mrs. William P. Ross, published in 1893, not sure if it said Potter or just P. The only place that book might be located is at the Library of Congress, but I am not sure, possibly in Oklahoma at Norman at the University.

All of the Cherokee were kin in the beginning, and it is hard to track someone when they kept changing their names to protect themselves from the white man's government. I understand believe me. We have the cousin of John Ross that married a Gist (of Sequoaha family), he died before they had children, then she married an E.S. Thornton, he died while she was pregnant with their second child, then she married a Harris, who was killed during the Civil War, then she married a Cline. With all the dead husbands it's hard to track her down, because, there are no marriage records, because they were Cherokee, you know the story I'm sure. We have cousins that were born on the Eastern Reservation, and they know we are kin, but those records are in a safety deposit box many miles from their homes and it is too late after work to reach them. If you ever run across a Barshula, Barshuba, etc, (female), or any of the others, please let me know. Thank you.
