Family Tree Maker 2012 Out of Sync with Ancestry - Duplicate Tree

My Family Tree Maker 2012 Tree became Out of Sync with my Ancestry.com tree. In an effort to correct this, I ended up with 2 of the same tree name on Ancestry.com.

I've renamed the tree I'd like to use on Ancestry.com

Can I simply "Delete" the "old" tree on Ancestry.com... that I no longer use?

I've turned off syncing for the "old" tree, but my concern is that folks had linked to some of my source information (which is now in the new tree) and I don't now how this will effect them.

Lastly, I generally leave my Family Tree Maker program open on my home laptop, is this not a good idea? I'm hoping to avoid this from happening in the future. (sorry for the long post :)

*Note the Trees in Question: Airgood Family is currently marked "private" on Ancestry.com & my actual working tree: Airgood Neidig Family Tree is the one I use & is marked "public."

Unfortunately you've entered a limbo zone. Ancestry.com and FTM synchronize for the most part, but they don't synchronize completely. That means that whenever a sync breaks, you're going to lose something--either from Ancestry.com or FTM. In your case, it sounds as if you've uploaded a new tree to Ancestry.com from your tree in FTM 2012. This means that you preserve everything in FTM but lose everything at Ancestry.com that doesn't sync with FTM 2012.

If you'd posted about your problem before breaking the link between FTM 2012 and Ancestry.com, we might have been able to avoid your current predicament. Unfortunately, by de-linking your tree as you did, you've now crossed the point of no return.

If you delete the old tree from which people copied your media, then Ancestry.com will no longer indicate your tree as the original source. Your fix for this is to download this tree into FTM. The downside is that you will lose everything in FTM that doesn't sync with Ancestry.com. (That may mean nothing or that may mean the loss of many hours of work.)

Finally, no it doesn't matter that you leave FTM open all of the time. It certainly doesn't affect your ability to sync.

Thank you so much for the response. I'll definitely use the forum in the future, "prior" to making any changes. After having read your post, I do feel as though I have a better of understanding of both FTM & Ancestry. Thanks again!
