Trouble With Half Siblings

Trouble With Half Siblings

Both of my parents had a previous marriage and had 2 kids and I have 1 younger brother with the same parents. I cannot get all of my siblings to show on reports, specifically the Hourglass report. Why? Do they have to appear as step-children of my respective parents?

The 2 from my mom's first marriage did live with us and I was able to correctly include their real father and also have my father listed as a step-father. But they show up in my Relationships as brother and sister and not half-brother and sister.

The two from my father's side don't show up as siblings in my relationships but when I go to theirs, in the column on the right it states half brother of me since I'm the Home person.

So it doesn't appear linking prior marriage siblings as step-children of my parents since they then show up as whole siblings in my Relationships.

I'm very confused on this nor do I think this is an uncommon problem. Can anyone help?

I just also noticed that my sister's father is listed as my step-father. Is that right? My parents never separated.

Welcome to the world of complications of relationships.

The problems you allude to aren't the only ones.

In addition to steps showing up in descendant charts and reports as if they are descendants of a step-parent (regardless of who is preferred), if you select a step-parent as the preferred parent (over the blood parent) and run an ancestral report, the report will be ancestors of the step-parent - who aren't related to the step-child.

I suggest people never enter any parents except natural blood parents and never setup step relationships. Make all your reports one of blood begatting blood. Otherwise, you will end up in a bloody mess after a few years.

You are dealing here with your own family and people you know. As the years go by and you enter more and more ancestors and prior and subsequent marriages of spouses, you will end up with mistakes that you don't even recognize becaue you forgot that Jim Smith's (born 1850) 4 generations of descendants should not be in his step-fathers list of descendants.

As for the relationships show in the upper right of the family tab, or in the Relationship Calculator - I would suggest to make suggestions to their enhancement page. This relationship calculator is pretty good, but it still comes up with questionable relationships.

I think I agree that 'step' relationship tagging should be avoided. The problem is that half-siblings don't show in the relationships view or on reports.

If you and this sister have the same father and mother you have a problem with the way the relationships are defined. If you and this sister have the same mother but different fathers then your sister’s father is defined as your stepfather. You can use detach to remove the stepfather relationship.

I think I got it corrected now. They all show as half siblings. I'm going to avoid using having anyone listed as step children so that blood lines are more easily discerned.
