After installing upgrade from FTM 2005 to 2012, I had difficulty sync'ing to an existing Family Tree Name on ancestry.com. I downloaded as GEDCOM and ended up with a family tree name that is "XYZABCFAMILY.ged", which is the only way I could sync. Could find no way to get rid of the .ged. Any way to just change the name on both ancestry.com and FTM2012?

Several ways, but assuming that you have created a tree in FTM with that strange name, simply from the Plan menu go to the rename function.

Otherwise you can use the rename function in Windows explorer

With respect, the simple "rename" option may not work. I tried it, and ended up being given lots of search results and hints in a tree which turned out to be the same tree I first created. Ancestry had evidently kept a copy!

I think, having had to split a large tree into manageable branches, that the best tactic may be to de-link the trees, get the FTM tree right (and with the right name), then delete the Ancestry version, and finally link / upload the FTM tree. This seems to work most smoothly.
