file extension problem

I recently received information from a lovely elderly gentleman in Germany; he went to an archive and came out with images of documents etc. He sent me these in a file he made in Family Tree Maker 5, and I was so excited -- until I tried to open it in Family Tree Maker 2012, the one I have. The .fbc file he sent me can't be opened in FTM 2012! I emailed him and asked whether he could save it in a different format, but I get the sense he's not well and I don't want to bother him further.

Is there any way I can get this file converted to an .ftm file that I can read? I can't afford to buy the FTM 5 program.

If this is an inappropriate question, please let me know, but I'm desperate to see what's in that file!

This one comes up from time to time and the solution is to download the free FTM 2005 starter edition and convert the file

Details, as always, in the knowledge base

Thank you so much for the information, John -- I didn't know where to begin to look.

I still have access to the old programs (back to version 3). Send the file if you cannot get it translated.

FTM 2012 will open .FTW files back to version 5

FTM 2005 Starter edition will open .FTW files back to version 2

It will save the converted file in a format that FTM 2012 can open

FTM 2006/16 will open .FTW, .FBC and .FBK files back to version 2

Thanks to both of you for responding. I did get it saved in the correct format and found lots of tidbits inside -- some already known, but enough unknown to keep me going.
