Surnames: Knowles/Nault
I am looking for any relations to the Knowles family that settled in the Morden district in the 1890's . There was abt 6 brothers and 1or 2 sisters. Alex, Fred, Joseph, Pat, Thomas, James? and my grandfather L. Toby Knowles. He was the barber in Morden until 1936 when he died and an early age. I believe one brother moved to Darlingford and 1 or 2 to Carmen. If anybody has any history on these families I would be please to hear from them. The original family name was Nault.

Hello I got this information for the family themselves when I went to visit some members in Carman, also from marriage records, birth records , and census records. It took me quite awhile to figure this out ,if I hadn't talked to Gladys nee Knowles and Josie nee Knowles from Carmen I would have still been going in circles. According to them if I remember it right the only brother that did not change his name to Knowles was Joseph who moved up to "Swan Lake Area" ??

I'm a descendent of Frederick, if you guys want to swap some information or touch base. Just wrapping up my part of the tree. Curious for concrete Nault -> Knowles documents too.

Hi Brett; If you check the census records for 1901 and 1911 you will find them under the spelling of Noles. But on Christina Sutherland and Leon Nault's marriage certificate it is spelt Nault. When my grandfather signed his Attestation papers for WW 1 he spells his name Knowles as did most of his brothers including Frederick. But his birth records show it spelt Nault. I belive in the 1911 census Christina had remarried and is under Beriault. But her children from Leon are under Noles. I'm going from memory now as its been awhile since I did the research. I also placed an ad in the Carmen newspaper to look for info on my dad's family and was contacted by family members. They are the one's that confirmed the name change. I went to Carmen and met a Josie and a Gladys that were cousins of my dad and remember my grandfather. He died in 1936 so I never knew him and my dad and my grandmother would never talk about his family. So after they both passed I started digging. If there is any info I could help you with please feel free to ask.

Hello Sharon,
My daughter is Kristal Knowles and her great grandfather was Henry Knowles. I have been following a lead regarding the possibility of Metis ancestry in the family and have discovered some interesting information in my search. Henry’s mothers name was Christine Sutherland and her parents were Pierre David Sutherland and Suzanne McMillan. Christine (also known as Justine) was born 1857 in St. Vital Manitoba and is listed on Metis Scrip as “halfbreed”.
Christine was married to a Leon Nault who was also listed on Metis Scrip as “halfbreed” He may be related to the Andre or Napoleon Nault of the Red River Rebellion. All the Nault offspring eventually ended up in Carmen and Morden Man. (where at the time there was a Metis settlement called St. Daniels) and they all eventually changed their names from Nault to Noles and then to Knowles! to hide their Metis ancestry. From here on they referred to themselves as “black irish”. When Leon Nault died suddenly Christine remarried a Joseph Beriault b. 1870 in La Broquerie Manitoba also on the Metis Scrip and listed as French Cree... and they had a son Henry. Henry probably took the name Knowles, same as his half brothers to hide his ancestry.

Hi Ashala; Yes I know of Henry but my research showed he was the son of Joseph Beriault. I talked to family members that still lived in Carman a number of years ago and asked about Henry. And they said that he walked out the door one day and was never seen again. They talked of Henry being a Beriault not a Knowles and never made mention of him using the Knowles name. Yes Leon was related to Andre and Napoleon. If I remember it right without looking it up in my tree Andre was an Uncle to Leon and as there were a couple of Napoleon's depending which one you mean it is either an Uncle or a cousin. The eldest son of Leon and Christine's never changed his name. He moved up north to the area around St. Rose du Lac. I have contact with his descendents. I hope this helps. And if there is any other info I can help you with feel free to contact me. My email is mitch1375mb@yahoo.com. Just give me a hint what its about in the heading, lol!!
