I am very new to Genealogy and need help getting started.

My paternal grandfather was Gordon Allen Newsome. He married Eva (Francis?). They were both born in 1889.

Their children were Ralph, Edna, Katie, Muriel(Merle?), Gordon Jr., Mildred, Betty (Bettie?), and Sue, all born somewhere between 1910 and 1935 I think.

I'd appreciate any help going back in the generations. The family is from Chickamauga, GA.

Thanks!

Dear Candy,
I am new to geneology also and am looking for Newsome's from the GA area. The ones in the family that I met had moved to the DC area but one of the brothers lived in Greenboro, NC for a long time. The names I'm familiar with are

Arthur James Newsome
Thomas James Newsome Arthur's son
David Allen Newsome Arthur's son
Belva Newsome Arthur's daughter
Donald Newsome Arthur's son from a third marriage.

Samuel Newsome Brother of Arthur
Cy Newsome Brother of Arthur

Thomas had two sons David Thomas and Philip James.

I haven't heard from them in a long time and have no idea who is still alive. I have been trying to find out who Arthur's parents were.

I thought it was interesting that you're Newsome Ford and I'm Ford Newsome. Would love to hear from you.

Dear JoeAnn,

None of those names sound at all familiar to me. If we are related, it must be from way way back.

I thought I'd also mention that, while most Newsomes I've ever met (especially with the 'e' on the end and not Newsom) have been African-American, my family is about as caucasian as they come. Not that that means that there are no relatives in common, but I just thought I'd mention it. As a matter of fact, I think the only white Newsomes I've ever known of are my known relatives. I wonder if there is any significance in that?

Thanks!
Candy

Dear Candy,
The Newsomes in my family are caucasian also. I have never met any black Newsomes. I think it is interesting but not relevant in our case.

What Ford family are you a part of. My father grew up in Grand Rapids, MI. He had a brother who moved to Rochester, NY and a sister who moved to Bowling Green, KY area. I now have siblings in Oregon, Michigan, Florida, Colorado, and other relations in Texas, CA, New York. Have you done any geneology searching on the Ford Family?

JoeAnn,

My husband's family is from Dalton, GA. I think his grandfather has a brother who lives elsewhere, but as far as I know they are originally from Dalton. I don't know if anyone on the Ford side has done any genealogy. I should ask his grandmother.

Candy,
I believe that the Newsome's came from the GA area originally. I guess I will have to invest some money and order the SSI paperwork on Arthur Newsome. It would be good to keep in touch and see if we happen to be related in some way. I know that our Ford side came from southern MI.

My grandfather was from the Louisville area (Avera) and we've traced him to Figures Newsome, are you related?

While I am African American, I trace my roots back to the Newsom(e) family that immigarted from Germany. They settled in North Carolina and had children by their slaves in addition to their legitamate family. Perhaps this will help you track your family back to Europe.
