My old laptop, (windows xp),was stolen. I was using FTM 4.0 and had it baked up on an external harddrive.New puter has windows 7.I was using 4.0 in a fairly basic way, just data input, no photos.I want to create a more updated Tree with photos etc.My question is : would it be a mistake to reload 4.0 and transfer my stored data to It, or buy a newer version and if so, which version?

I would suggest that you install the current version FTM 2012 on your Windows 7 computer

The issue that you have is that it will not read your version 4 .FTW file directly.

To overcome this, you will need to temporarily download the free FTM 2005 starter edition. This will read your version 4 .FTW file and convert it to FTM 2005 format that FTM 2012 will read and further convert.

Once you have your file running in FTM 2012 you can delete the 2005 starter edition
