Where do you enter your data? online or home computer?

Where do you enter your data? online or home computer?

I have finally loaded my FTM 2012 software!
I have been working hard on my online family tree...and have now gotten used to adding my citations, media etc, using this format.
However..at first glance it looks SO much easier to load data on FTM?
What are your thoughts? Better to enter new data on ancestry.com then link to home...or vice versa. Thanks for any input.

I think that FTM with its many, many more functions and options and reports is more suitable and capable to enter data.

I regard my online tree as an extension of the Publish capability in FTM

What ever you decide, there are probably advantages to be consistent and stay with one application.

For me it is FTM

Given the many sync issues we see on this online community daily, I have long ago used my FTM as the master file for entry and management, make backups, compact it, then ... and only then ... sync/upload to the online Tree.

However, with its latest iteration, I do find searching for "leaves" and media easier online now. Yet, because much of the data online (from fellow enthusiastic Tree builders) has duplications and other unnecessary corruptions, I am very picky about what I accept.

Cheers,
Bo

Thank you both for your opinions.
I wanted to check in before I make my next entries..trying to figure out whether I should do so on FTM or online. Based on this, I'll work with FTM as my base. Thanks!

I'm with Bo on this one. Just my two cents worth. I've entered data both ways and I don't know if its related, but duplications are the most frustrating experience. I've had citations that are the same for one person that I only needed one and somehow acquired several. Also be very cautious about what you accept from another's tree online at Ancestry as they can be full of junk with no documentation. Seems about 90% of what you get through others trees are based solely on another's tree only. He said she said. Ok for a lead but don't put it in until some kind of citation is available. (That is other than another ancestry tree as a citation)

Also you're better off putting in things manually rather than merging from another tree. Mines not perfect either and I've learned a lesson. Slowly trying to make it more acceptable.

A couple other considerations for using FTM as your primary.

1) Consistency of Place Names. You can control consistency of place name spellings and completeness better in FTM.

2) Filters. In my surname study, I use filters many times during the day trying to zero in on candidates to either place in my tree, or match from my tree. I understand the on-line version doesn't have filters. For example, who was born here, died there, or lived over there.

3) Relationship Calculator - does on-line have this?

4) Birth Date calculator - I use this in FTM all the time. Does on-line have this?

5) Fact Notes. I put details about facts into Fact Notes, including transcriptions of wills, census records, birth and death records, obituaries, etc. I understand On-line won't accept FTM's Fact Notes and doesn't have anything comparable.

There's probably more advantages of using FTM over on-line, but that's should be enough to convince you to use FTM as your main engine.

Thank you very much!
I appreciate your help..and the detail you've provided.
Reading through these message boards has been very helpful as I relaunch my efforts into building my family tree.
I began this 20 years ago, producing a book for our parents at our wedding, combining both of our families. Over the last couple of years I've gotten back into this, and am determined to build a much more extensive history. Thank you!
