Surnames: Jelley
Hi John, my investigations tell me that my paternal grandfather and forebears came from Gumley. i am still trying to sort out the morass of Jelley's in the area, but I think it goes something like:
Grandfather - Samuel b 1865
G.G/F Eli b c1838 - listed as marrying an Emma Jelley on Samuels birth cert.
GG.G/F Samuel b c1804
GGG.G/F Benjamin b c1774
A lot still to be proven, let me know either way.

regards
Colin

Hi, strange as it may seem I live in Australia and was surfing around and saw your query about the Jelley family of Gumley. You may already know this information but thought I would tell you what I know in case it helps with your search, even though your enquiry was posted some time ago.
Pop Jelley (I never knew her first name) is still living in the Keeper's cottage in Gumley. She is 90 years old now and is the Aunt of my own Aunt, Helen Norman from Leicester. As a kid I used to go to Gumley to visit Pop who was then the gamekeeper (the only female gamekeeper in Britain at one stage) and her mother Nellie who has long since past away. Pop was also the kennel master for the fox hounds and we used to love to go and see the dogs. I also remember walking through the woods and Pop showing us the badger trails. I last saw them myself in the 1970's when I went back to the UK on a working holiday. My mother has just returned from a visit to the UK and went with my Aunt Helen to visit Pop. She obviously married a Jelley but I don't know what happened to him. They had a daughter called Barrie (another female with a male name). Barrie lives in Holland with her husband. Pop still does all her own gardening at the cottage and seems to be in fine fettle for her age. None of this is probably new to you but thought I would send it just in case.

Thanks for your reply Caroline, yes Pop did die on 11th July, my brother and his wife were over in the UK from Australia at the time. After all these years it is nice to know her name was Lille Ellen. Thank you for taking the time to post your reply. Regards Lesley.

I am researching the Jelley family tree in Coventry UK, where I was born and still live. Records back to the 1770s show that here many Jelleys worked in the watch-making industry.

We are holding a family party on sept 4th this year and it would be good to hear from Jelleys around the world.

Best wishes
