Hi can anyone help transcribe my Great Grandads (Albert Boyes) occupation and employer please?

on genes reunited the transcribed record says occupation is - "Theft" and employer is "Gramby Coffy Trade"

both i think are incorrect though it does look like it says theft i cant see why anyone would admit to that as an occupation even if it were true.

any help would be great

Many Thanks in advance

Leighton

It doesn't look like theft to me, but I am unfamiliar with British records and so cannot say what it DOES look like. Weff? Is there anyone else in that area who works at Granby coffy (whatever) and you can check their record to decipher?

If you go to 1911 census occupation codes www.1911census.co.uk/content/default.aspx?127
you will see that 486 is a cook (not domestic) and 941 is a coffee house. So perhaps the occupation is chef ?
Hope this helps.

I think it's just phonetic spelling, and I agree that the occupation is Chef, spelt "Sheff" in this case, and the employer is most probably Granby Coffee House (which might be this place http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/3060034). There are numerous references to Granby in Leicestershire, particularly the Marquis of Granby who had lots of pubs named after him. :-)
