I am looking for death info for Daniel Costigan b. 1859 in Michigan & Mary J. Daughtery b. 1860 in Ireland. Their daughter Marion J. married Edward Schweighanser in 1917 (after divorcing Hampton Weiss). Edward & Marion had 2 children: John J. b. 1920 & Elizabeth b. 1928. They lived on Haines Street in Philly in 1920 & 1930. I believe Daniel died before 1910, possibly in Ohio and Mary was living in Philly in 1920. I'm hoping a relative of the Schweighanser children will see this post and respond. Any help would be most appreciated

Not sure what records you have; do you have the pension record for Daniel Costigan, served at Battle of Shiloh and died soon after in Detroit Michigan? Lists siblings of Daniel, son of Daniel Costigan and Catharine. Fitzgerald. States that Catharine died 4 Sept 1888.

Was Daniel Costigan the bridge captain listed below in Cleveland, Ohio? There was an article about this Daniel related to an accident at the bridge he operated.

Thank you so much for all the information. I did have most of it but you did provide me with a key fact from the Ohio city directories. The address on Hecker Street is the address of Daniel's youngest son Francis birth. So the Daniel who was the bridge captain in the article is one and the same. Something (death ?) happened to Daniel in 1899 or 1900 to force his wife to place 3 of 4 children in an orphanage in Ohio and move to Philly. I think as a last resort I will try the Ohio Historical Society.
You have helped me in the past so please know how much I appreciate your time & effort.

Here is part of the article regarding Daniel Costigan:

January 26, 1896 – Plain Dealer:
The Blame. City Officials Are Trying to Place It on the Firemen. The Bridge Captain
The Bridge Captain says the public are unprotected.
Investigation into the accident:
The Men Who Were Hurled Into the River Tell Graphic Stories of Their Rescue – Capt. Costigan Says He Has Often Expected Some Awful Accident on Account of Lack of Warning Lights – Direcots Palmer and Wright Are Making Inquiries Into the Affair – The Fire, Engine Recovered Badly Damaged. …….

(followed was an account of a firetruck that came down a hill too fast and went into the water)
,,,,,,,,,

Costigan said: “There is not a gate or light or anything else to warn pedestrians or vehicles that the draw is open. I cannot do it and I am not supposed to do it. I will tell the truth, if it costs me 100 jobs. The city has never provided any protection for the public and it is a wonder an accident has not happened before this.”
Costigan said further that there are five red lights on the bridge, on at the masthead and two at each end of the draw. The light at the masthead is to inform (…nfariners?) whether the draw is swung, and the others are to guide them in steering clear of the draw. He says that it is his duty to watch the boats and give the engineer signals and he cannot warn the public of dancger. ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

I'm assuming you are referring to Jane in the 1900 census. I assumed that Jane was Mary's mother & possibly the head of house, Faust was Jane's son in law. Looking more closely Jane states she has been in the US for 60 years and Mary states 17. I'm looking for evidence to back up this relationship & hoping that the census taker erred likewise concerning Mary saying she is married in this census. It would make sense that Mary came back to Philly to live with her mother & sister until she could have all her children with her. Happily they were reunited in the 1910 census. But what happened to Daniel, the bridge captain!!!
