I am looking for where in Norway Martin Thoreson was born. He died on 29 May 1911. His obitury doesn't mention where in Norway he was born. There are four other men with the name Thoreson, born in Norway also living in Wiota township in the 1910 census:
Andrew Thoreson, 88 years old living with Ole Oleson and is listed as his step father.
Andrew Thoreson, age 44 years old and a boarder.
Peter A. Thoreson, 58 years old married to Emma.
I wonder if these people were related and if so where in Norway they are from.
Thanks,
John

Does this look like it might be him in the 1880 census?

It certainly could be the right Martin. Some of the facts fit and others don't. I have Martin's father as Hans and mother as Nettie. The birth date I have for Martin is 2 April 1871 in Norway. I believe this is from Martin's death record. I don't know anything about Martin's siblings. I suppose one of the only ways to tell is getting an obituary on Hans. I wonder where the family came from in Norway. Thanks for pointing this family out.

Check out this page. It is from www.familysearch.org for Norwegian baptisms. The first few children are children of Hans Thoreson and Anne Larsdr. The birthdate for Martin is not what you have, but it matches the age for him in the 1880 census, and the rest of the children's names match.
I don't know if you are familiar with Norwegian naming customs, but Martin's surname should have been Hanson, or named after his father's first name. Wives kept their maiden name. However, after emmigrating, the family often took the surname of the father, more in keeping with American customs.

I also found a gravestone in Wiota which had a Gubjor Thorson on it, I have to look again to see where I found that.

This appears to be Martin's marriage to Orpha, listing parents as Hans and Annie.

Norway has great online records for parishes and census records. I can look for Martin's birth, or I can tell you how to navigate the website.

One more thing! This is them leaving Norway for America. I believe I found Hans coming by himself in 1869. Possibly because Anna was pregnant with Peter? He shows up in the 1880 census, but I don't find him on this ship list.
