Sync does not sync corrections/changes

I recently installed Family Tree Maker and synced to my online tree. I used the tools in FTM to "Resolve Place Names" and "Global Spell Check". Both took some time, but were quicker than going through each and every person individually.

After syncing, the online tree has NONE of the corrections/changes. The corrections/changes do appear in FTM. Why don't those changes sync to the online tree. Is there something I'm missing.

All help appreciated.

Out of curiosity, where did you find the "Global Spell Checker"?

As to your question, I haven't the slightest idea. I don't sync.

Thanks

Does yours sync every change? I just made a test change to an event description of a single individual and synced. It didn't change in the online tree. I noticed when I synced that I received the message attached, and remembered that I received the same message after the place name resolution and spell check.

Changes I make to my online tree sync into FTM, but I am realizing now that any changes I make to FTM do not sync into my online tree.

Any ideas?

Did you stop the sync there? you may need to tell it to continue, even though it is supposed to continue on its own after x seconds. That notice is in the beginning of the sync, not when it is done.

Make a small change to your online tree and sync. Follow that change and see that it took.

Then make a small change to your FTM tree [like changing a name, something obvious] and sync. Make sure the sync completes, you should get a message trees synced successfully.

Let us know. I do sync and my link has never broken. I have had to restore from backup three times and still no broken sync.

A few things: Never use FILE/Close. Always use File/Exit, or the red x at the top right, or double click another tree that you want to view. Why this should make a difference, I do not know, as it shouldn't, but it does [or did].

Never cancel a sync, always stop the process with task Manager.

If your online tree says it is syncing and you know it is not [e.g. FTM says it is up to date] make a small change in FTM and sync.

Those are my collected hints so far.

Let us know how it goes.

We have had previous threads on this topic.

I had to start sync-ing from an alternate user profile (Windows 7) because changes made from the FTM side never showed up in the online tree, from my primary profile.

Thanks for the ideas barbarajfn. I had not stopped the sync at that point, but allowed it to continue. It completed “successfully”, but didn’t make any changes. I had already tried making one minor change to an individual. If I made the change in the online file, it changed my FTM file. But, when I make a change in the FTM file, it doesn’t change the online file.

After more research, I believe my file is corrupt, and it occurred when I was using the “Resolve Place Names” tool. While I was doing that, FTM crashed a couple of times. Some of the info I’ve found indicates that when FTM is closed improperly it can corrupt the data file. Compacting was suggested, but that didn’t work for me. Before one starts the process it recommends a backup, which I did. Unfortunately, each time it crashed, and I restarted Resolve Place Names, it suggested another backup, which I did, and it overwrote the first backup.

I think my only option at this point is to unlink the trees, and relink to the online tree. I will have to go through Resolve Place Names and Spell Check all over again. But, this time I will manually create backups that I can name differently.

Burgess, that may work for you as well. If you want to look at the info, you can find it here:

I’ll keep you updated about how it works for me.

Thanks - but what I'm doing works fine, for me, and I have no desire to unlink while it is working.

Well, I would suggest don't resolve place names. Many people do not like resolving place names because our ancestors were living in a place, for instance, that wasn't USA when they lived there.

And regarding backups, never overwrite old backups. If I am doing several backups per day I precede the second one with a 2, then 3, etc. So I can always go back to a good one.
