Two brothers Bertelsen emigrated from Denmark to US 1903 and 1911

I’m looking for two brothers of my grandmother, or to be more precise the possible descendants of at least one of them in the US. They emigrated 1903 and 1911 as shown below. I learned from a cousin that one of them could have returned and the other stayed in the US. She remembers her grandmother speaking of one brother sending letters; that was 1940’s or early 1950’s.

They were:

1) Laurits Kristian Bert(h)elsen, born 5. Feb. 1881 in Tømmerby Parish, Vester Han District, Thisted County, Denmark.
Arrival found on Ellis Island records for 1903:

First Name: Launts Christian
Last Name: Bertlsen
Ethnicity: Denmark, Scandinavian
Last Place of Residence: Bjerget
Date of Arrival: Apr 23, 1903
Age at Arrival: 24 Gender: M Marital Status: S
Ship of Travel: Etruria
Port of Departure: Liverpool
Manifest Line Number: 0011

However, the link to the original ships manifest leads to a wrong ship in a wrong year:-((
Also the age is not correct; he was born 1881 and should be 22 at arrival. The rest fits.

2) Bertel Kristian Bert(h)elsen, born 11. July 1886 in Tømmerby Parish, Vester Han District, Thisted County, Denmark
Arrival found on Ellis Island records for 1911:

First Name: Bertel
Last Name: Bertelsen
Ethnicity: Denmark, Scandinavian
Last Place of Residence: Bjerget, Denmark
Date of Arrival: Aug 22, 1911
Age at Arrival: 25y Gender: M Marital Status: S
Ship of Travel: Oscar ll
Port of Departure: Copenhagen
Manifest Line Number: 0028

This time the manifest is linked correctly and tells that he was going to his older brother in Morris Plains ??, New Jersey. Two screenshots attached.

Any information on immigration and possible family in the US would be appreciated. Note that I have all information on family, birth etc. in Denmark, so don’t waste your time with that.

Their family can be seen at this site: http://frederiksen.slaegt.info/hourglass.php?show_full=1&...

Ellis Island listed the wrong year of arrival for Laurits, he arrived in 1905 (copy from Ancestry attached)

After arrival, he apparently decided to be younger:

In 1910 census Lawrence Bertelsen was in Union County New Jersey census, age 23, unmarried.

Later censuses show him in Morris County NJ married about 1911 to Emily born in England, his age listed as 31 in 1920, 45 in 1930, and 54 in 1940.

In 1930 they had 8 daughters and 2 sons: May 18, Ethel 17, Lawrence Jr 16, Elsie 14, Evelin 11, Margery 10, Dorris 9, Gordon 5, Dorothy 4, Lois 15 mos.

------------------------------------------------------------

1930 census of Passaic County New Jersey lists Bert Bertelsen 44 Denmark married to Thora 42 Norway, and they are still listed there 1940, no children.

Thora's gravestone has a blank space where Bert should be listed; maybe he returned to Denmark when she died?

This is a fine link you sent me. I'll make good use of that another time.

However this time I read through all the pages for Etruria April 1903 twice without finding Laurits- I was about to go crazy, but luckily I was saved by the next reply.

@HRFFW

You saved me. Turns out that Ellis Island has a wrong year of arrival and the Danish Emigration Database has a partly wrong name!

Navn: Bertelsen, Lauritz Peter
Stilling: Landarbejder
Alder: 24
Bestemmelsessted: Shelburne
Kontrakt nr.: 243500 Forevisningsdato: 4/7/1905
Fødested: Bjerget
Dansker)
Skibsnavn: Indirekte
IDkode: I0506B0311

Also the place of birth is wrong; he grew up at "Bjerget" Lild Parish, but was born in another parish. But he was going to Shelbourne, which I believe is the proof.

The 1910 US census lists him as 23, but he was 28 if the count was before Feb. 1910?

Morris County fits exactly with the place his younger brother Bertel was destined for acc. to the ships manifest from 1911.

The empty place on the gravestone supports the saying one brother returned to Denmark.

This is a huge step forward. Now I only need to find the eight daughters and two sons:-))

Thank you for your support
Karsten

Last night I received on my mail an obituary for one of Laurits Bertelsen’s family. That gives a pretty good picture of the family including living persons. I’m very grateful for that. Combined with the last post from "falsterden" I have a good basis for furter search.
It will be up to me to continue the search for those living people.

Laurits Bertelsen’s immigration, wedding and death has also been confirmed.

For the brother Bertel I know now that he had no children and that he was not buried with his wife. Also, he is not listed with a SSN.
So he could have returned to Denmark. Most likely I’ll end up checking with the official “Folkeregister” if he returned. But that has no real meaning, as he left no children.

I’m very happy with the outcome of this thread and would like to thank you all for your great support. There may some areas where I need further assistance, but then “I’ll be back”

Has anyone followed up on Bertel Kristian Bert(h)elson? born July 1886, and immigrated to USA 1911 (headed for New Jersey where his brother Lawrence Christian Bertelson was living).

The forum found a Bertel Bertelson living with a Thora from Norway, but none of the group paused to examine him, as our attention was on Lawrence.

Now I see that Bertel can't be the right guy. I checked the originals of the census records (Thora is transcribed as Dora, Thora, and Flora), and searched the military database for his World War I draft registration.

The latter gives birth date of this Bertel as January 1881. Census consistently give his date of immigration as 1901. His birth date is given as 1886 in one record; but in looking further, more often he is listed born 1881.
