The name Joshua Bowdoin, Bawden, Bowden are all on the 1880 census. Most of these are located in Georgia, Tennessee, and South Carolina.
I believe they probably should be Boughtons. Does anyone have any information on these Joshua's from the Southern states.
I have come to a dead in on my Joshua Boughton who settled in Essex, Virginia...my last information. The original Joshua Boughton was here in Essex,Va c1680....I think his father was Thomas Boughton who shows on James City by 1639.
The next earliest Joshua Bowdoin was married to a Martha J.. He was born in S.C. in 1803 and it shows her father being from Virginia. If anyone has information as to the parents of this Joshua Bowdoin, or any history on these Joshuas' would be much appreciated. Thank you. Ann

Ann,
I'm responding to a mmssage you posted 11/04 so you may have already rec'd a reply.
The Joshua Bowdoin you refer to was born 11/5/1803 Edgefield District (County), SC, died 11/2/1880 Gordon County, GA. The wife you refer to, Martha J. Lane was his second wife.

Joshua parents were:
James Bowdoin, SR b ca 1765 Granville County NC, died ca 1845 Monroe County GA
Wife, Priscilla Williams married 10/29/1785
They had 9 children, your Joshua was the 7th

My reference is U Bowdoin Marsh's book, "Bowdoin Family In The United States" page 59 (tell me this if you reply so I don't have to search again).

Hi Rick,

Am interested in information on James Bowdoin and Priscilla Williams.

Do you have anything besides U Bowdoin Marsh's book giving his lineage.

We can't prove back beyond James' father, William, and would also like to find James' mother. Some records show her as Elizabeth Macon -- but we can't find this link.

There is a lot of controversy about William's parentage -- and there seem to be some missing links of proof back to Pierre -- so would like to work with you on this line.

Thanks,

Ardie Brown

Surnames: Bowden Bowdoin Macon Travis Williams Maddox
This, too, is part of my lineage. I read several pages on the descendants of Pierre Bowdoin and it stated that one male and his family did move south. If I remember correctly, one book about the early history of Naushon Island, Maine, told part of the family's story. Have you found any links to James' father, William?

We've been in contact before about this line -- and do appreciate everything that you've helped us with.

Have you found proof that William Bowdoin & Elizabeth Folsom are the parents of James?

This would really be exciting news -- as we've been hunting for his mother for so long.

Some had said she might be a Macon -- but we couldn't find anything to substantiate that either.
