Marcelle, I can tell you that she still resided at the orphanage on Jan 10, 1920. Based the 1920 census, it appears as though Marie was born in NJ, as were her parents. Be careful, as this info was not always accurate. It does not appear as though she had any brothers or sisters in the home with her in 1920, however, I can tell you that the children were sent out of the home at age 14. My grandfather was in the orphanage the same time as Marie Sommers. What is your relationship to Marie Sommers ? Did you know her ?

Marie was the child of Edward and Mary. Edward was the oldest of 10 Sommers children. My great grandfather, George was his brother.

I have found most information on the other 9, and am trying to complete all the children for these families.

For a long time, I knew that Marie had a brother, John, who died in 1920, but he lived with an aunt when his parents died. It was only recently that I found Marie, and am trying to find out whatever happened to her. She was born in 1908.

Hoping I can find a married name.
Thanks.

Marcelle, do you know what year Edward or Mary Sommers died ? I am trying to ascertain what year Marie may have been sent to the orphanage? Sometimes the parents were alive and the parents couldnt afford to take care of the kids, placing them in an orphanage. My grandfather lived at the orphanage from 1911 thru 1921. My grandfather passed away in January at the age of 98. He has a few pictures from the orphanage with some of the other kids that lived at Kinderfreund. It will be a few months before I have a chance to go thru the photos and notes I have taken from all the stories he used to tell. Please keep me email address and contact me in a few months if you dont hear from me... I dont know for sure if I have anything on Marie or John, but I will let you know... Janice

Edward died in 1913, Mary in 1914. I know her brother John lived with an aunt after that - but he died in 1920.

That's all I know. I just recently found out that she even existed!

Thanks

I'm also looking for information on my maternal grandmother, Anna Theresa Rinderer (DOB Aug. 13, 1900). She and her siblings were placed a Lutheran Orphanage in Jersey City, NJ. after the deaths of their parents, Bertha and Thaddeus Rinderer. It was located on Nelson Avenue. My grandmother lived at the orphanage from 1908-1916. Her siblings names were Reinhold, Freida and Marie.
If anyone has any information, please let me know.

1920 - Reinhold and Marie were still living in the orphanage in 1920 as per the census. Both their parents were born in Germany, while Rheinhold and Marie were born in NJ.Reinhold was 15 and Marie was 10 in the census record. Hope this helps. My grandfather, Elmer Schreiber was living in Kinderfreund from 1911 until 1921. My grandfather's brother Charles and sister Edna also lived in the home.

In the 1900 census in Newark, NJ there is a Bertha Rinderer married to a man, looks like his name is Thala. Bertha was born in Germany in March 1870 and immigrated in 1888. Thala was born in Germany in Oct 1863 and immigrated in 1884. As of the 1900 census Bertha had 6, children but only 4 were living at the time of the census. Children were Joseph, Otto, Edward and Fred. Joseph born Jan 1892 in NJ, Otto born Aug 1893 in NJ, Edward born July 1895 in NY, Fred born March 1897 in NJ. Not sure if there is a connection to your family. My grandfather lived in the orphanage the same time period as your grandmother. My grandfather told me that the boys would leave the home at approx age 14-15 so these boys if they are brothers of your grandmother may not have been sent to the home. Hope this is helpful

My family name was Sommer(s), and they never lived in Newark. I don't think there is a connection.

Marcelle, sorry for the confusion.. I was replying to a message posted by another user about last name Rinderer. I guess you are getting the notification because Rinderer was posted in reply to you email. I thought ancestry would have notified that person..
