If you are interested in finding your Danish ancestors with a minimum of external support, here is a DIY kit for starters:

General:

A must read is this site:
http://www.sa.dk/content/us/genealogy
Includes links to the
Census registers http://www.sa.dk/content/dk/ao-forside/find_folketallinger
Parish registers http://www.sa.dk/content/dk/ao-forside/find_kirkeboger
and the Danish Demographic Database (DDD) http://www.ddd.dda.dk/ddd_en.htm

More detailed background info is found here:

https://www.familysearch.org/learn/wiki/en/Denmark

http://net.lib.byu.edu/fslab/researchoutlines/Scandinavia/De...
Note: A few of the references in this last document are outdated.

Placenames and Parishes:
Looking for placenames you can actually find a lot yourself. Give it a chance.

A. Outline map with counties and parishes.
http://www.dis-danmark.dk/kort/kort.htm

B. Place name and parish database.
http://www.krabsen.dk/stednavnebase/index.php

C. Very usefull list of churches/parishes with parish boundaries and detailed maps
http://www.korttilkirken.dk/alfabetisk.htm
1. Find the church (alphabetical listing of churches – usually the Lutheran church and the parish name will be nearly identical) and click on the name. A new page opens for that church/parish.
2. Pick the menue item “sognegraensen” (not “kort” !) and you’ll see the parish on a zoomable, detailed map.
Eventually historical parcel maps may be available for the parish you picked. If this is the case, a menue item “Historiske Matrikelkort” is visible.

D. You may also search for historical maps directly from this page:
http://www.korttilkirken.dk/herreder/AlfbHerred.htm
But that requires the name of the “Herred”. You’ll find that if you have picked a church/parish through C.1.
The parcel maps found here may be useful if a census record contains a parcel number for a household.

May I add http://www.folketimidten.dk/gb.htm
and http://www3.sympatico.ca/colin.swift/danish.htm to your list?
Mini English/Danish dictionaries of terms commonly found in the parish records.

We have several Danish relatives, Why don't the Danish use
their father's surname?.

Thank you

Your question may have deserved its own thread. Anyway, searching for Danish Surname Tradition on Google will give you plenty of answers. Or take a look at these sites:
