I would appreciate if anyone can give me information on my grandparents Alex and Lempi. They came from Finland and was told my grandmother shortened the last name to Maki. They had three sons: Walter George (my father), Tauno (Tuffy) and, Unno?Uno. My grand parents lived in Dekalb, Illinois on Pleasant Street. I' m very interested to know what part of Finland..relatives there and in the states. My grandmother maiden name was Sillampaa, she had a relative in Waukegan, Illinois. Thank you for any help!

Hi, Grandpa Walter Maki's father Ottah "Otto" Alexandria Hautamaki was born 17 Sep 1896 in Hassan Lasni, Finland. You can find the ship he came in on in the Ellis Island records. The ship's name was the Celtic and he signed in at Ellis Island 7 Feb 1909. He resided some time in Karijaki, Finland before coming to the USA. Even though there are several families that came to the USA bearing the name Hautamaki I haven't been able to connect him to any of them yet. Let me know and I can send you what I have on our family. I have a few more generations back on the Sillampaa side.

dont know of Alex and Lempi, but I thought it such a co-incidence that my Finnish grandparents as well lived a short time in Dekalb and also on Pleasant Street. Hautemaki was listed on my grandfather's ss application. I think he listed it as a town he was from and it thru me for a loop.
