I am interested in finding out any information on my Grandfather Michael Aloysius Twohig. He was born in County Cork and emigrated to the United States in the 1920s. He married Mary Degnan of Masina, NY and lived in Queens, NY. Mary's living relations include Father Jim Degnan of Boston.

My Grandfather's relations in Ireland included Jack and Sheila Twohig of Cork.

My father, Michael Dennis Twohig is living in Greenport, NY and is celebrating his 75th birthday today.

Please contact me if you have any leads on my family.

Thank you,

Dan Twohig

I have some Twohigs from Cork, as well, from around the Parish of Donaghmore.

"My" Twohigs came over in the second half of the 1800's. Any idea what area of Cork yours are from?

I have found a Michael Dinnis Aloysius Twohig born in 1870 in Mawgan Porth Cornwall. His father Michael was with the coastguard from Cork, mother Honora Murphy.Moved to Cornwall in 1867. The family returned to Ireland. The name is so unusual that I feel that they must be related.

Hi Dan,
You didn't give a date of birth for Michael, there are 3 pages of Michael Twohigs on 1901/1911 census, most likely he will be just Michael on the census, so its hard to pick him out, I found a Michael Denis Aloysuis Twohig but he was 30 and married.
So I will add the link to census.

Thank you Bernice.

Michael Denis Aloysius is my Great Grandfather.

I'll look at his household and see what else there is to find.

That's the right household. My grandfather Michael Aloysius was born on April 29, 1906 so he does not yet appear in the census.

Thanks

Dan

Hi Dan,
When I saw Mary Rose on the English census and realised she was older than John Patrick, who was on the Irish 1901 census, I wondered where she was as she would have been 2 years old.
Found her 1901 North Street (Skibbereen, Cork)
Head David Twohig age 35 born Cork, Ireland Revenue officer.
Wife Hanna Maria age 29 born Cork.
Niece Mary Rose 2 born Cork.
She must have been on a sleep-over at her uncle Dave's, which worked out well for you, as it gives you Michael Dennis Aloysius's brother.

1911 census.
Chapel Road (Middleton Cork)
Head David 45 born Cork, Customs & Excise Officer.
Wife Hanna Maria born Cork.
Daughter Mary Josephine age 5 born Cork.
Daughter Norah Christina age 4 born Cork.
Son John Patrick age 1 born county of Kings (Offaly).

So Sandrapeters863 was on the money.
Both of the sons Michael & David born England & Ireland, fits in with what she told you 7 replies back.

Michael Twohig born in about 1800 was married to Frances Kenaley.
They had a son Michael Twohig born 25th March 1827 in Cork.
Michael joined the navy and took part in the 2nd Opium war in China aboard HMS Calcutta.
He retired from the navy in 1859 and joined the coastguard. He was posted to Padstow Coastguard Unit Cornwall England. He died in 1877.
He married Honora Murphy and they had the following children
1. Mary b 1862 in Cork
2. David b 24 July 1865 Rosscarby Cork married Hanna Maria Lynch in 1894
3. Elizabeth b 10 June 1866 Cork
4. John Patrick b 5 May 1867 Mawgan Porth Cornwall The spelling on the net is wrong.
Married Ellen O’Brien on 30 August 1890 in Cork.
This is where I became interested in your family. Ellen O’Brien was the sister of Mary Ann O’Brien who was the mother of Michael Collins 1890-1922.
Their children were known as O’Brien-Twohig and a couple are quite famous and John Patrick was the chief accountant for the Irish Education Dept.
5. Annie V b in 1869 in Mawgan Porth Cornwall
6. Michael Dinnas Aloysius Twohig b 25 Nov 1870 Mawgan Porth Cornwall
He may have married Elizabeth Ann Lynch .
I believed that he died on 24th June 1958 in Cork.
I knew nothing about his emigrating.

If you want to know anymore please contact me through Ancestry.co.uk as I will not put my E-mail address on an open board.
PS I don’t know if Mary Rose b 1899 is the daughter of David or John Patrick.
PS and you are very distantly related to Michael Collins.
