Changing computers for syncing

I currently have my desktop computer FTM set for syncing to ancestry.com. Recently prior to travel, I made a backup of the ftm file, transferred it to my laptop, and ancestry.com recognized my laptop as the syncing computer. It seemed to sync my files with no issues.

I hae read complaints for years about ancestry.com only syncing to one computer, and the above process seems so simple it leads me to believe that perhaps it didnt do what I thought it did, or can cause harm to either the online or computer files.

Can someone confirm this backing up and transferring to another computer method works and causes no harm? Or, did Ancestry.com and FTM change so that a tree can be synced to more than one computer?

If this process is all I need to do to change syncing computers, it will make my research much easier

After i wrote the above, I noticed I am having problems syncing. My great grandmother on my ancestry.com tree is connected to her father, but Ive synced several times and I cant get her father to show on the ftm tree.

There are other instances of this in the tree as well. Any suggestions?

Transferring sync by restoring a backup onto a new computer works pretty well. That's a new option only available since the latest update so I haven't had a lot of experience with it, but I've tried it a couple times on small test trees and haven't experienced any problems.

As far as parents missing on FTM that appear OK in Ancestry, that's most likely a preferred parent issue. Sometimes (who knows why) a parent won't get flagged as "Preferred" in FTM, so even though they're there, they don't show in the tree.

See http://ftm.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/5207 for how to resolve that issue.

Only being able to sync to one computes is a minor inconvenience with this workaround.

changing computers again

After a couple years since my post above, I've decided to change computers back to my desktop so I can view it with my wide screen monitor.

I backed up the file from laptop ftm (which was the sync computer) put it on thumb drive and opened it from my desktop ftm. When I tried to sync it I got a message that it had been deleted online. Which it hadnt.

I signed out of both ftm and ancestry, logged back in nothing works. When I go to the new tree tab in plan, the online tree Im trying to sync with my desktop says "not linked to this machine" and no action available.

Any ideas?

I've had ftm since it came out in a couple dozen CDs, then online with ancestry, and just renewed my subscription, but I also just learned of a similiar program my family tree builder through my heritage. com, that lets you sync to as many computers (and other devices as you want).

Can anyone help with me syncing to my desktop or advise me on family tree builder?
