Hidalgo County, San Juan or McAllen area. Looking for information on my great-great grandfather Joe Mayfield. May have a "G" as his middle initial. I believe he was in the Law Enforcement career field. I appreciate any help.

Hidalgo County - ref Mayfield in Law Enforcement. As a child in Hidalgo, Texas, I remember that a "Mayfield" responded to calls for law enforcement from residents in Hidalgo. People used to say he was a "Rinche" i.e. "Ranger" from Mission, but I am inclined to believe that he was associated with the Hidalgo County Sherriff's Department. You might want to start there..

This is in response to Mr.G.T. Gonzales(Hidalgo County) about the Mayfield Family.

My maiden name is Mayfield. I have family pictures of the Buckles family (my grandmother) dated 1899 traveling in a covered wagon to Idaho. My grandfather's name was Roy Cleo Mayfield born Aril 5, 1896, Decater, Illinois. I remember only one brother. Do not remember his name.

Tom Mayfield was my great-grandfather. Between 1910-1921, he served as Pharr City Marshall, Texas Ranger and Hidalgo County Deputy Sheriff. He had a son, Joe, born in 1905, who was my grandfather.

I grew up in Pharr and remember "Whispering Tom". In my memory he was always glad to see us kids whenever we saw him.
About 15 years ago Southern Living magazine had an article about him on the back page.

Thanks, Kathryn. You wouldn't also happen to have known or remember his daughter (my great-aunt), Hallie Henderson, who lived on Cherokee street in Pharr? I tried to get a re-print of the Southern Living article, but I was unsuccessful.

I don't think I knew Hallie Henderson. But we moved from there when I was in the 8th grade (1958) . But Daddy will be here next week and I will ask him. When was she born?
I remember Cherokee street, as that was the street that the fire station was on and Daddy was a fireman.

I think my Aunt Hallie was born around 1910. My maternal grandfather, Joe Mayfield, (her brother and Tom's son) was born in 1905. My Aunt was married to Ray Henderson, and I believe he might have been an attorney in the Valley.
I'm so glad so replied to my original message. I've been trying to find out information about Whispering Tom for the last few years. He lived a very "colorful" life. Would you ask your Dad if he remembers my grandfather, Joe?

Thanks, and I hope you and your family have a lovely holiday season!

I am sorry, but Daddy did not remember any thing else about the family Mayfield.
He did tell a funny story though. a man went in a bar to buy tobacco and two hot heads in the bar started a fight. The man beat them both up and went home. The two filed charges and Tom went to the first man's house to talk to him. The man said, "you don't have to whisper, I already told my wife about it".

Thank's for asking your dad. That was a great story! I'm going to print it out for all my cousins to read.
