Unable to Compact file with FTM V16, windows 7

Unable to Compact file with FTM V16, windows 7

I am still using FTM V16 with the vista patch and windows 7 32 bit. The program froze when I tried to export a file with selected individuals. I then attempted to compact the file and each time I try, when it approached 100% I get an error message saying the file has been damaged.

I imported the same file into FTM 2012 with no problems and I was able to compact the file in FTM 2012.

Is there anything that I can do to remedy the problem with FTM V16?

Thanks,
Kyla

Here are the file repair options within FTM16:

Since you have FTM2012, you could also take that version and export it to a FTM16-compatible GEDCOM (which will include media links) and re-import it into FTM16 from there.

I don't see an option to export to FTM16. I see an option to export to Family Tree Maker, 2008/2009, and Gedcom 5.5. With a Gedcom, some information could be lost?
Thanks,
Kyla

Export Gedcom 5.5. The choice for FTM 16 is in the next window. [before the export, but after choosing gedcome 5.5]

Thanks!
I was able to export to GEDCOM 5.5 with FTM16 and then inport back in. As far as I can tell the errors are stripped out. Thank God! I lost the indent spacing for the starting paragraph of all my note sections. I tried importing with indent checked off and it did not correct it.

I think most of my errors in the file were connected with books, as that is what the error report showed. I tried deleting all the books that were saved, but that did not work. I think it may have something to do with windows 7 and the vista patch??

FTM16 will eventually not be able to run on more advanced platforms.

I suggest you start working in FTM2012 and export to FTM16 (without any images) occasionally to print reports or whatever.

Thanks,
That is good advice.
I don't want my data to be held hostage. I think I have to bite the bullet and use 2012.

I did find that the export by Gedcom of my file from 2012 to V16 gave some errors. Is there any way of telling where these are in the file?

I have been using FTM 16 for many, many years. I now use it on a Windows 7 box, 64 bit, without the Vista patch. My file 91meg file with 14,000 people compacts just fine. Have you tried uninstalling the Vista patch? I understand it is not necessary to use the patch.

The way to find these errors is to look at the GEDCOM and either count the lines to 404 or find a program (like TextPad) that will print line numbers next to the GEDCOM code.

I get this type of error when I import a GEDCOM tag that is not supported by FTM but is still a valid tag. This is because FTM does not support all GEDCOM tags.

_dcause is not a regular valid tag

Thanks for the tip. I have not tried uninstalling the patch. It is my understanding that the patch is needed for books and reports. One thing I could try would be trying to compact the file on my old XP PC.
