My Uncle Allan Robinson married Ranie Bjorg Ragnhild in the US around WWII. He was in the Army Air Corp. Would love any info on my Aunts records in Norway. I've seen an obit with Sortland, NOR. Thank you.

Sortland is the name of an area in Nordland, Norway. It is sometimes associated with Hadsel, Nordland, Norway.

The Digitalarkivet web site has been adding scanned images of the original Norwegian parish church records for anyone with Internet access since November 2005.

The Digitalarkivet web site - http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/WebFront.exe?slag=vis&a...
An English option is available by clicking on that word from either the left hand column or the blue link bar along the bottom of the homepage.
The scanned images are available from the homepage link "Skanna kyrkjebøker" [Norwegian version]/"Digitised parish records" [English version] which is listed along the left hand column and from the blue banner of links along the top section of the homepage.
Clicking on "Skanna kyrkjebøker" [Norwegian version]/"Digitised parish records" [English version] will bring up another screen and listing to choose from. Choose "Lesa skanna kyrkjebøker" [Norwegian version]/"Read the digitised parish records" [English version].
After you've clicked on that link and a new main page has presented on the screen be sure and read the instructions that are available from the Digitalarkivet for navigating the scanned records. The instructions are available in Bokmål (official Norwegian), Nyorsk (Norwegian), Davvisámegiella (Saami), and English.
Recommended basic reading are the "Startsiden" [Norwegian version]/"Main page" [English version], "Brukerveiledning" [Norwegian version]/"User's guide" [English version] and "Om tjenesten" [Norwegian version]/"About this service" [English version].

Good information about translating the formats of Norwegian parish church records during various time periods, many of the basic terms used and understanding how to use the information should be studied at this web site -
http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~norway/na20.html

For the protection of privacy, there are limits for how recent church records can be published:

- Birth and baptism records up to and including 1929
- Confirmation records up to and including 1934
- Marriage and banns records - no limits
- Civil marriage up to and including 1950
- Death, burial and stillbirth records up to and including 1930
- Migration records - no limits
- Joins and leavings of the State Church up to and including 1950
- Records about dissenters up to and including 1950

If you cross these limits while browsing a register or a list, you will not see the digitised image, but a message informing you that the image cannot be displayed.

Where were they married in the USA? Where did they live? Any dates for either of them? Birthdate?

Searching all the known info in the USA is usually helpful before trying to search in Norway.

Ragnhild is usually a woman's first name. Not a last name.
Bjørg is maybe her last name?

Thank you for your good advice. I'm still searching for any info (can't even find a marriage license and my dad does not remember where they got married...perhaps during the war). But I did find her obit with birth date of 2 Aug. 1923 in Sortland, Nor. Then moved to Tacoma, Wa USA (probably as a very small child). I will take your advice, thank you again. Sincerely, Teri

Thank you so much for your direction in helping me gain more knowledge. I am not familiar with sites other than U.S. so I am excited to learn. I think perhaps her first name was Ragnhild (we called her "Aunt Ranie), and her last name Bjorn. Born 2 Aug 1923 (according to obit). Thanks again, Sincerely, Teri

How exciting! Thank you so much for this info. My father thought her "maiden name" was Peterson, and I see here that her father had the name Pederson before moving to America. I will look now to your recommended web site to understand and translate the formatted information. Thank you again! Sincerely, Teri (Virginia, USA)

On the link given by the previous poster, who did a very good job of finding her,

Ragnhild Bjørg (her first and middle name) is entry number 59, and on the lower half of the page of baptisms.

Born 2 Aug. 1923, baptised 14 October 1923, Ragnhild Bjørg, daughter of carpenter Ragnar Antone Pedersen, and his wife Bergljot Ragnhild Berg Peterson, they are living at a place that looks like Steiro, and there is a notation that the family went to Tacoma, USA.
Both of Ragnhild Bjorg's parents are born about 1899 according to this baptism record.

baptismal sponsors look like Andreas Thomasen and his wife Ellida Steiro, bachelor Johannes Berg, and Styrmand (a sailing job which means steer man literally) ?? P. Bø.
The birth is ekte = legitimate.

The parents should be on the census of 1900 in Norway and also on 1910.

The parish records link online is from the website that is the Digital Archives website from the University of Bergen. It is an actual scan of the parish records. The source of that record is:

Nordland fylke, Sortland i Sortland, Ministerialbok nr. 895A09 (1915-1925), Fødte og døpte 1923, side 91.

which means: Nordland County, Sortland in Sortland (Sortland parish in Sortland municipality?) Ministerial book number 895A09, (1915-1925) the section of Births and Baptisms, page 91. That record can also be seen on microfilm, if you live near a LDS (Latter Day Saints) research center (usually in most LDS churches) they can send for the microfilm for you. But in this case, the online scan is just as well.)

The link below is the one given by the previous poster.

On the 1900 census, here is a Ragnar Pedersen born in 1899, living in Sortland with his parents and siblings.

The father Ragnar Antoni Pedersen Steiro left Norway in the spring of 1923, I find him on the emigration record leaving the port of Trondheim.

http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbas...

He is traveling with a couple from Sortland also,

178358 1923 208 4 1810 22.05.1923 Ragnar Antoni Peders. Steiro ug Snekker m m 1899 Sortland Statene Norske St.fjord Cash a Utv.att. Sortland lensm. 21/4-23. 26/5 sendt Nordland k.k.

He left Sortland April 21, 1923, and the ship left Trondheim 22 May 1923. The notation on Ragnhild Bjorg's baptism must indicate that the father is in Tacoma, Washington. Ragnar Antoni Pedersen Steiro (farm name) unmarried (not accurate?) carpenter, male.

The other people he emigrated with:

178356 1923 208 2 1808 1 22.05.1923 Norvald Arneberg Peders. Steiro g Motorskipper m 1896 Sortland Statene Norske St.fjord Cash a Utv.att. Sortland lensm. 17/4-23. 26/5 sendt Nordland k.k.

178357 1923 208 3 1809 22.05.1923 Petra Kristoffa Steiro g Hustru Motorskipper k 1896 Sortland Statene Norske St.fjord Cash a Pr.att.

If they (Ragnar and Bergljot) were married in Sortland before the birth of the daughter Ragnhild it should be in those parish record books. The parish record says it was a legitimate birth for Ragnhild. And those were kept by the minister, who would know. ??

This parish record is for those who emigrated from the parish at Sortland. The entry for Ragnar Antoni Pedersen says he is a gift snekker - a married carpenter.
