Then delete the old one.

By "start a new tree" do you mean to type everything in again, or, export and import?

There might be a slightly quicker way.

I presume you mean you want to remove the text strings accepted by FTM in the death field, like "infant", "dead", "deceased", etc.

If so, you can get them to group together in your index.

At the Family tab of the People Workspace, change the info to be presented in the index to be the death field. This is done at the icon at the top of the index with 3 vertical bars.

Now, go to the "sort" line, click on the down arrow, and choose to sort based on death date.

All text strings should sort between deaths with numerical dates entered (on top) and blank death dates (on the bottom).

You can now select each person who has text in the date field, one after the other, and edit the death date field as you wish in the far right panel.

Query: If you have gone to the trouble of entering that people who have died with a text string, but don't know the date, why would you want to remove the text string?

Thank you. That's a good idea. I was not the one who entered text into date fields. It came imported that way from other people who shared with me.

Sorry mis understood what you were doing.

Unfortunately there are few task that can be done in a batch process in FTM.

What information is in the strings that you want to remove.

There are "unknown" and "deceased" text strings in about 800 or 100,000 death date lines.

These are acceptable text entries that FTM allows into the death field when the person who you have "borrowed" this file from has ascertained the person was dead, but didn't have a date.

If you are willing to accept other data regarding these people from another researcher via merge or import, why would you reject their judgement about whether they are living or dead?

Your question has caused me to change my mind. I will keep the text even though I just found I can globally remove all the text by using Legacy.
