I’m looking for the death dates and burial place of Annie Hopkins SMITH and her husband Samuel Henry SMITH.

Also buried in Hanna maybe Annie’s mother, Sarah NIVEN (ms FLEMING). Sarah died in Hanna on 22 June 1936.

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Alison

Hi,
The Master Surname Index (not online) (mostly burials in Alberta cemeteries) of the Alberta Genealogical Society lists these names;

Annie Hopkins SMITH, 1886 - 1958
Samuel Henry SMITH, 1886 - 31 Dec 1965
buried next to each other in the Hanna cemetery.

There is no Sarah NIVEN or FLEMING or FLEMMING on this AGS Index.

Hi Peter,

I am so excited to find them. I have been looking for them for quite some time. By chance does the index happen to mention a plot number?

Thank you for looking this up for me. I really appreciate it.

Genealogically yours,
Alison

Hi Alison,

Yes, the plots in the Hanna cemetery where Annie & Samuel SMITH are buried is, 78,3,1 & 2.

I checked again for Sarah NIVEN (FLEMING) also in other cemeteries near Hanna, and also indexed on her name Sarah, but nothing fits the death date of 1936. I also checked the plots next to the Smith's.

It's possable there is no grave marker as folks had no money in the 1930's, or she is buried elsewhere.

Peter

Thank-you very much, Peter.

Thanks also for doing some more searching on Sarah. She is a real road block for me. She died at her daughter's house, Annie SMITH in Hanna on 22 June 1936. That's what gave me the lead for Annie and Samuel. The family was origianlly settlers from the Lethbridge area (1886). I have found that her funeral was held in Lethbridge, but she is not burried in the family plot at Mountain View Cemetery, Lethbridge where her husband, Robert NIVEN is either.

Oh well. I am very excited about finding the SMITH's though..... :-)

Thanks agian.

Sarah NIVEN is listed in the "Index of South Western Alberta Obituaries 1885 - 1959".

You can find this in the News Paper Indexes on the AGS Lethbridge Branch Website. http://abgensoc.ca/

Then ask someone at the Lethbridge Branch to get you that obit. That must tell you where she is buried.

Peter.

Thanks again Peter.

I already have the obit that’s how I found out that she died at her daughter’s in Hanna. I have even been in contact with the funeral home in Lethbridge and the City of Lethbridge and no one has record of where she could be buried.

Thanks again for all your help. I really appreciate it.

Alison:

Annie Hopkins Niven Smith was my grandmother on my fathers side. Her mother Sarah Niven(Fleming) died at my grandmothers home. She lived with them the last two years of her life. When she died my grandfather, grandmother and my father traveled to Lethbridge in a horse and wagon with a coffin containing Sarah Niven. My dad thought it was June and he remembered it being very hot. The coffin was stinky by the time they got to Lethbridge for the Funeral. The Niven family was a very well to do family in Lethbridge. I do not know where in lethbridge she was buried but I do know it was in Lethbridge. The family was very well off and she would have been given a proper burial. I am doing some geneology of my family and I have some pictures of Sarah Niven and her mother Elizabeth Flemming.

Thank you for your reply, Gary. Sorry mine has taken so long. This is exciting because I was just going through my database and this makes us third cousins.

Martin Bros. Funeral Chapels Ltd Lethbridge, went through their ledgers and found that Sarah Niven passed away June 22, 1936 and the funeral was held June 24, 1936. However, they do not have any information on where she was buried. Her husband,Robert is buried Mountain View Cemetery, Lethbridge, but the Cemetery can't confirm that his wife, Sarah is there.

Genealogically yours,
Cousin Alison
