Don

Thank you so much for your time and effort in posting all the Blankenship information on this message board where all of us Blankenship descendants can read it. I am not back to Ralph Blankenship yet.but, with a lot of luck and research maybe I will get there. The information you have found should help me a lot then.

Thanks again.

You're absolutely right about 1749. I was out of it after mowing grass. The point is --if you haven't located tax list for later years, I can ask next time I'm there. I don't believe they have much on VAGenWeb yet.

Additional Henrico Co. Tax lists

Yes Charles, I would like to receive Henrico tax lists for other years. I thought I had the 1695 list here somewhere but now I cannot find it. So any tax lists would be helpful. I'm trying very hard to locate information on Joseph Blankenship who I think may possibly be the missing son of the Immigrant Ralph Blankinship and his wife Martha.

If you like you can send direct to my email address at donb@megabits.net.

Additional Research

My family was not in the Colonel's book and doesn't show up anywhere in published material. I'm working my way back to Elam Blankenship(b)1810 married in 1853 to Minerva Elam whose father was Charles Elam.

I grew up on the James River near Ralph's home, but so far have not made the connection. I will be working the Virginia Libraries as time permits and will keep an eye open for Joseph.

I'll give youmy family when I get the supporting documentation. Right now I'm stuck on Aurelious Jackson Blankenship, son of Elam, who shows up in a couple of places with diferent wives.

Questions for Charles

Can you obtain information on who owns the current land where Ralph Blankenship once lived? It would be recoreded at the County Court house. If you don't know where it was I can send you a detailed map if you send me your email address at donb@megabits.net.

Also, it would be very interesting to learn more about the early iron works (forge) at Ampt Hill (sometimes written as Ampthill). Do you know any more about this activity. There also was some early coal mining in this same area. Do you know where that occurred in relationship to Conjurer's Neck, Bermuda Hundred or Ampt Hill. I believe the first discovery and mining of coal was at Manquin, 19.5 miles northeast of Richmond. Also, was Manchester the first name for Richmond, VA?

Ralph's land

Don, I live up in the mountains now, but will try to get to Richmond soon and look into current ownership of Ralph's land. Once I worked with a man who did a study of Iron furnaces in Virginia. His name was H.D. Capron and his material was given to Lynchburg College at Lynchburg, VA. I'll try to dig into that, too, for Ampthill Furnace. I've often wondered if Ralph could have been a supervisor of an iron furnace, but those thing ran 24 hours a day and were tempermental, so he would have been on site all the time and that just does not seem like Ralph's style. The "Iron Master" was the person who literally pulled the clay plug at the right time and allowwed the molten iron to flow into the sand bed where the pig iron was formed. These men made or broke the operation based on their experience. Ralph could well have been an experienced person who trained "Iron Masters". His long lfe indicated to me that he didn't live around an iron furnace with all the charcoal smoke and fumes.

I have 7 1/2 minute Quads of the vicinity of Ralph's land, but your map would be helpful. I took one off your web site, ut it was not too clear.

Manchester was seperate from the city of Richmond until perhaps about 1925. I live in the (old) Manchester area. Manchester was south of the James River and Richmond was north of the James River. The area formerly known as Manchester is now a part of the city of Richmond, VA. We have a Manchester Courthouse and a Manchester High School. The former Manchester area extends to Ampthill.
