Jeff Hatcher asked about Oscar onthe PACK surname board. I was poking around in my census subscriptions and found this:

Name: Sam Pack 1,2,3,4
Sex: Male

Individual Facts
Birth 18 Jul 1885 West Virginia
Census 1910 Glen Alum, Mingo, West Virginia
Census 1920 S tafford, Mingo, West Virginia

Marriages/Children
1. Mary Neal
Marriage bet 1904 and 1906
Children Ethel Pack (bet 1906 and 1908 - )
Oscar Pack (1 Jul 1909 - 1993)
Della Pack (bet 1910 and 1912 - )
Wayne Pack (Jul 1915 - )
Elmer Pack (Aug 1918 - )
Eddie Pack (bet 1920 and 1922 - )
Stella Pack (bet 1922 and 1925 - )

Notes (Individual)
General:
In 1910 the family is in Glen Alum, Mingo, West Virginia:

Peck, Sam, head, 23, married 5 years, WV, WV, WV, Farmer
----, Mary, wife, 16, m. 5 years, WV, WV, WV
[Wrong - Jeff Hatcher says she was b. 17 Mar 1892, so she is 18 in 1910.]
----, Ethel, du, 3, WV
----, Oscar, son, 10/12ths, WV
[Census taken 16 April 1910, so that is close.]

In 1918 Sam filled out a WWI Draft card in Mingo County. He stated that his birthday was 18 July 1885 and his closest relative was Mary Pack.

In 1920 the family is in Stafford Township, Glen Alum District, Mingo, West Virginia. Sam was "Peck" in 1910. This year he is "Pock":

Pock, Sam, head, 35, WV, WV, WV, Farmer
----, Mary, wife, 28, WV, WV, WV
----, Ethel, dau, 13, WV
----, Oscar, son, 11, WV
----, Della, Dau, 9, WV
----, Wayne, son, 4 and 6/12ths, WV
----, Elmer, son, 1 and 5/12ths, WV

[Census taken 20 Jan 1920]

In 1930 we find something odd. On Page 3A, HH 40, Fam 40 is

Pack, Romby, head, 80, widowed, Ky, Ky, Ky
----, Sam, son, 39, 36 at marriage, WV, Ky, Ky
----, Rosa, dau-in-law, 26, 23 at marriage, WV

HH/Fam 41, 42 and 43 are not Pack.

HH/Fam 44:

Neel, Wally, head, 40, Va, Va, Va
----, Mary, wife, 28, WV, WV, WV
Pack, Della, dau, 16, WV
----, Oscar, son, 20, WV
----, Wayne, son, 15, WV
----, Elmer, son, 9, WV
----, Stella, dau, 7, WV
----, Eddie, son, 9, WV

Explanation #1, Mary's brother Wally is visiting, Sam and his sister Rosa are at his father's house, the enumerator makes a hash of it.

Explanation #2, Sam and Mary break up. Mary either marries a cousin, has a bachelor brother move in to help out or Wally's surname "Neel" is coincidence. Sam marries Rosa there in 1927, moves in with his aged dad, shaves 5 years off his age.

Explanation #3, Mary's husband Sam dies, the one up the road is related, somehow, but not her dead husband.

#4: None of the above.

Notes (Family #1)

Ted, I want to thankyou for the info. that you sent. This line of names are the correct names in my family. If there is any other info. from this line that you may have and are willing to share I would greatly appreciate it. Etta

Hi Etta,

All I know is what I found on the census, and I shared it. I overlooked the fact "Romby" was a lady.

Do you know her maiden name?

Do you know if Sam took up with a younger woman, and Mary married Walter Neely?

I'd be happy to send you a GEDCOM if you'd like.

Ted
