Default tree view - Petition

I want my tree to default to the Profile View of the last person viewed, not the Pedigree view and not the Family view. AND I want this view to be the default for my TREE, not just for me, personally. I want my invited guests to see the profile view of the person I send them a link for.

Why is this so much to ask?

If the damn software can remember the breadcrumb trail in the pedigree view of the 8 people I viewed before the last one, why the hell can't it remember I was in the profile view when I closed my tree? Or why can't there be a setting in my tree settings to select the profile view as my tree's default view for anyone?

Grrrr....

I totally agree Jo. 99% of the time I work in Profile View so that's what I want to see when I open a tree. I very rarely need to view trees.

FWIW, me three (and, so as to not start the ball rolling on "wish lists", I'll say no more)

P.S. JoMac, How 'bout "Default tree view - Petition" as the title?

They set the system-wide defaults at whim. I don't know how much server resources it would take to set more than a million individual defaults.

I have no use for a pedigree view of my trees' root persons, the latest 'default'. Until they installed the non-improvement latest pedigree and "family" views' versions, the default was the pedigree view of last person viewed -- which also is useless for me. These views only instigate useless tree hints that I've already ignored. I have no idea whether any user/customer requested the new default.

This is why I go to a tree from my browser bookmark to the tree overview page from which I can easily see a link to the last person viewed, or select where to start.

Setting a browser bookmark bypasses the page-load time of any Ancestry.com page, and has the advantage of working when non-Tree parts of the system are down. For me it is a one-click, no-loading-wait-time simple option.

Even if you were able to set a personal preference on the site for default opening page, you could not set that preference for others (who might not have chosen that preference themselves anyway).

If your tree invitees log in and then click on the link you sent them, the link should send them directly to the linked page. Are you saying the link does not work for them? Are you sure they are clicking on the link from your message?

I always prefer to work in Profile view. The change to any other view is stupid in my opinion. It takes more clicks to find a profile. Also takes extra clicks to add a child.

Thanks for the idea, frostfreedet. I never thought of sending a link to a particular profile in a direct email. That would easily solve the problem of the invitees having to find their particular branch of the tree. Many of them have told me they weren't even aware of the different views, that moving around is not intuitive, and some only visit the tree once and say it's too complicated.

It could be set in a browser cookie. That would not take any server resource at all.

I dislike the pedigree view too, it's without merit of any kind.

As far as finding the last person viewed when you sign in, here's a shortcut:

1) Go to the default pedigree view.

2) There is a box under the tan tool bar across the top of the page. It says "Find a person..." in the box. Mouse over it. It will bring up the last person viewed immediately.

3) Roll down and click the name.
