Absolum Stewart was born in 1770 in Augusta, VA to William "Ralph" Stewart (17 DEC 1747 in Augusta, VA -18 NOV 1835 in Logan, KY) and Mary Elliott. His death is about 1829.

Absolum married Susanna(h) Smith (ABT 1770) on 20 JUL 1793 and had 5 children: Robert (1794), Andrew (1795), William (1796), Elizabeth (1797), and Charles (1798).

Absolum married Tabitha Clay (ABT 1778) on 26 May 1798 and had 2 children: Nancy (1799), Rebecca (1800), Eleanor (1801), Elizabeth (1802), Emily (1803), James (30 SEP 1804), Melinda (1805), Mary (1807), Johnson (1808), Harvey (1813), Cynthia (1814), Mitchell (1818), Hiram T Stewart (ABT 1821/1823 - AFT 1896).

Was James married to an Edith Skidmore about 1820 in Kentucky? And was his death 10 AUG 1855 in Ohio? If so, this is the correct James listed above for Absolum and Tabitha Clay.

I hope this helps get you on the right track. While I did not find birth records for this information, so my information is not verified 100%, they were located in several others family trees. It will hopefully get you pointed in the correct direction to begin looking at census records, birth certificates, and death certificates, etc. to verify and get more exact dates.

Additionally William Ralph's parents were James and Ann Lafferty but I have no information found on them.

My research and info comes from www.familysearch.org

So I found a problem. The James Stewart whose parents are Absolum Stewart and Tabitha Clay is not the same James Stewart married to Edith/Eda Skidmore as some of the research others have done suggests. His parents were not Absolum and Tabitha. That James Stewart was born in 1804-1868 and I found a tombstone for him here: http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=26.... This could be some of the confusion on the dates of birth for James you are finding as some has confused the two Jameses and have mixed the history.

But you mention James being married to a Nancy above, married in 1843. Do you know Nancy's maiden name? That may help narrow down the search.

And let me see if I can recap of what you are 100% certain of.

James' parents were Absolum and Tabitha Clay Stewart. James was born in Virginia. James was married to a Nancy ? in 1843.

If we can back up to what we know for certain that will help backtrack us to find the correct James Stewart and we can fill in the gaps from there.

I'm not sure we can rely on what we know from family search yet as there is massive contradiction there among the sources. And we may not be able to ever find a reliable source of certainty, but we can certainly try. I have found a few reliable written sources that have Absolum and his father Ralph detailed there so if we can find reliable sources to link your family to them that will open up a lot of research already there.

Let's start with younger generations and work our way back as those will be more certain because there will be stories in your family and people who knew or knew of these relatives.

We'll get there if there are records, but I think we have to toss out anything we see by others on the internet as most of that resource is wrong as they have confused who James Stewart, Absolum Stewart, and Ralph Stewart are....in some we see different dates and in others we see wrong relationships where someone lists a spouse that really was a child. I found the exact same problem when I was researching my Stewart family...coincidentally from Virginia as well though I'm not sure they were closely related to your Stewart family.

On the Stewart side of your family, who are the oldest relatives you have reliable information on based on family records, stories, etc.? What are their dates of birth, death, locations, marriages, etc....anything you know personally 100% or close to 100%. Hopefully that will lead us to a census which is reliable, or information in one of these other family books that while not as reliable is fairly reliable as long as they cite sources of how they know these relationships.
