Looking for informationon the Peter Short family. His father Richard was born in 1745 in Staunton, Va, m. (also in Staunton) Anne (?) who was from that area also.
During the Revolutionary War Richard fought with the 10th Pennsylvania Regiment of the Continental Line under Capt. John Steel. After the war in 1784 Richard was given 200 acres in Westmoreland (now Beaver) County near present day Pittsburgh, Pa. There are stories that he built a cabin on that land, but was burned out repeatedly by the Indians; he may have been killed there in 1787 at age 41.
Richard & Anne had only one known child - PETER b. 1769. It is believed that the family moved after Richard's death as the next bit of info shows that Peter was "bound out" until he came of age, was married to Catherine McGEEHAN and lived in Washington, DC. Later Peter moved to Emmitsburgh, Md in the 1790's. They had 3 children there - Samuel (1796), Elizabeth (1797), & Daniel (1799).
They may have been influenced to go to Pennsylvania once again by Father Demetrius Gallitzin, a Catholic priest, who was at the Conewago settlement near Emmitsburg. In 1799 Fr. Gallitzen set up his mission church at Loretto, Cambria Co., Pa. Peter & Catherine's other children were born there - Mary (1800), Susan (1803), Ann (1805), Emily (1807), Catherine (1809) & Martha (1813).
Susan (b. 1803) m. Charles Bruce and had 2 children, Maria (Ma-RYE-uh) b. 1821 & William b. 1824. Maria m. Andrew Lewis & they lived in Ebensburg, Cambria Co., Pa surrounded by many relatives including the family of Ann Short (1803) m. Horace Paddock. In later years the Paddock family joined the DAR under Richard Short, Revolutionary War Veteran.
So, does anyone know which branch of the SHORT family this family belongs to? Staunton was heavily settled by Scotch-Irish and was incorporated in 1745. Did this family come down from Pennsylvania with the Germans migrating to the Shenandoah Valley? Was this family one of the many Shorts in Md and Va for years and years? Who was the mysterious Anne that Richard married? How did Richard come to join the Pennsylvania Regiment?
There are stories that Peter's wife Catherine McGEEHAN was closely related to Francis Scott KEY, composer of "The Star Spangled Banner" through the father, John Ross Key. Does anyone know of this connection?
