Great finds!

Especially the Clement Pettman(n) link. This seems like a VERY strong likelihood; he was born only a year prior to Myrtle. It is possible he did not even know Myrtle was pregnant when he enlisted/embarked (or maybe he did and that was his escape plan!)

Since he married in England, he may not have known about the baby (or he was upset that she had given the baby away to her sister). It would have been very difficult for her to manage financially alone though, especially with the stigma of being an unwed mother back in those days. He didn't return from the war until 1919, by which time his son was a toddler! Though his occupation is shown as a share farmer, if his dad was a police officer it may have become distorted thru hearsay. Or he may have become one upon his return to Australia...
