Richard:

Glad to be of some help. With the early nature of when I identified James W. as James Washington and the lack of pension, or any post war research on him specifically -- I would have to say that the middle name must be on an official record -- pay record, company roll, muster roll or some other document. The men also filed petitions with the state, so it may be how he signed his name on a petition. I do not have a copy of his discharge as one was not kept with his individual records, so I cannot give any more detail; however, there apparently one on file at the Allegheny County Courthouse -- this is from the research of another individual.

Good luck.

Jim

Thank you for the 1860 Census. Yes; that's no doubt them...head "A" being Agnes.

You said "The three sons I am interested in...". Who are you researching? Is it Rark, Sharper and one of the Sloans?

Rick.

I now see that you were referring to the 1859 PCD when you mentioned "the three sons".

Who all is at 588 Liberty then?

Are you getting this from a CD that can be purchased? The few times I've searched, I've not found a good selection of Pittsburgh City Directories.

Rick.

The three Sloan brothers -- as they were members of the 9th or what became the 9th.

Great! But ???: I have the subscription too but only see the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania Directories, 1888-92 in the list of PA databases...where do I find the 1859-1860?

Is this a crazy coincidence or what? Within a month of your starting the 9th PA Reserves board I decide to dig into the Civil War...and run into you researching Sloans. Wow.

So what is your connection?

Rick.

You have to get into the bowels of their site to find the old directories -- it will not come up in the main search. I stumbled on it by accident once and was able to find the 1859 there.

Don't get under the estimation that I am only researching the Sloans and Daughertys, but rather everyone with a connection to the regiment. Chris Rasmussen & I are working on a regimental history and I am working on the angle of doing biographies of all of its members.

My connection to the Sloans -- none. To the regiment, I am related by blood to three of its members and loosely connected via marriage to about 9 others. That is the basis for my interested.

I don't know why I decided to set up this board, but saw that I could do one for the regiment and proceded. Kismet I guess.

More on Sloan research.

I was able to go back and check backups of my research and in March of 99, I still had him listed as James W. By July 10, 99, I have him listed as James Washington Sloan. During that period, I would have done three research trips. In January 99, I spent an entire day at the National Archives -- looking at various rolls, records and pensions. I probably did not have all the research entered into my database until late Spring. I believe I also did a similar trip in May to NARA looking at the same. In early July 99, I was in Pittsburgh doing tombstone research. Therefore it was from one of these trips that I gathered the name Washington. If I look hard enough, I'll find my original notes on it. It is no doubt an affidavit signed by Sloan which lists his middle name.

Regarding William J. Sloan, I found this:

Vital Records: Directory of Deceased American Physicians, 1804-1929

Sloan, William J.
Died: Jan 27, 1921 in: East Liverpool, OH
Born: 1840
Type of practice: Homeopathy
State/year of licenses: OH, 1896
Places/dates of practice: East Liverpool, OH, 1886
Medical school: Pulte Medical College, Homeopathic, Cincinnati, 1886, (G)
Journal of the American Medical Asociation citation: 76:882

Hope this helps.

Jim-
I have a family letter which was written by "Frank Snook" of Pennsylvania during the time he was stationed at Fredericksburg. I've been unable to locate him in any Civil War Regiments. His writing on paper is very clear. However I could be missing clues within the letter due to difficulty in understanding the terminology/language of the day. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Susan:

Perhaps Frank was a middle name. I found a Joshua F. Snook from Pennsylvania in Battery C, PA Light Artillery. Perhaps, if you could provide a transcription of the letter, it might help.
