I too was frustrated by the problems with IE8, but I am still using
Windows XP. So IE7 works OK. Still I was not satisfied. With some unwarranted trepidation, I installed Mozilla FireFox browser. I have read there were problems in the past using FireFox 3.0, but have not found any using FireFox 3.5. It runs faster and safer than Internet Explorer.
I then installed the following Add-ons: AutoPager 0.5.2.2; GoogelPreview 3.22; ImTranslator 3.2.8; And Screengrab 0.96.1. When you find these Add-ons, read the description of each to understand what they will do for your genealogy research.
I also installed NoScript 1.9.7. When you open Ancestry.com, you will have to click on Options in the lower right corner of the window. Select Allow Anceatry.com or select Temporarily Allow Ancestry.com. [To install Add-ons, click on Tools in the menu bar then click Add-ons. In the Add-ons window, click on Get Add-ons, then click on Browse All Add-ons. In the search window, enter the title of the Add-on, then press Enter, (or click on the green & white button to the right.)]
And finally, when you first attempt to view a document on Ancestry.com, it will ask you to install Advanced Image Viewer 1.0.0.1. You should be able to install it as you would any Add-on.
As you become familiar with FireFox, you may want to browse through other add-ons to suite your needs. And, FireFox is easy learn.
