Similar to what Tech Support suggested, but a little different, it is possible to make this a trusted site in tools/internet options/security/trusted site/sites - There is a check box to require server verification (https) If you deselect this check box you can then make http://boards.ancestry.com a trusted site and the save works.

I too was frustrated by the problems with IE8, but I am still using Windows XP. So IE7 works OK. Still I was not satisfied. With some unwarranted trepidation, I installed Mozilla FireFox browser. I have read there were problems in the past using FireFox 3.0, but have not found any using FireFox 3.5. It runs faster and safer than Internet Explorer.

I then installed the following Add-ons: AutoPager 0.5.2.2; GoogelPreview 3.22; ImTranslator 3.2.8; And Screengrab 0.96.1. When you find these Add-ons, read the description of each to understand what they will do for your genealogy research.

I also installed NoScript 1.9.7. When you open Ancestry.com, you will have to click on Options in the lower right corner of the window. Select Allow Anceatry.com or select Temporarily Allow Ancestry.com. [To install Add-ons, click on Tools in the menu bar then click Add-ons. In the Add-ons window, click on Get Add-ons, then click on Browse All Add-ons. In the search window, enter the title of the Add-on, then press Enter, (or click on the green & white button to the right.)]

And finally, when you first attempt to view a document on Ancestry.com, it will ask you to install Advanced Image Viewer 1.0.0.1. You should be able to install it as you would any Add-on.

As you become familiar with FireFox, you may want to browse through other add-ons to suite your needs. And, FireFox is easy learn.

The combination of IE8 and Vista has caused some problems with users both for the enhanced viewer/saving images/printing images.

Some have found this useful:

Explorer 8 works better when running in compatibility mode. To run in compatibility mode, click on the compatibility icon located next to the web address bar. This icon looks like a piece of paper torn in half.

For printing issues, you can try turning off Protected Mode in IE8.
Click Tools> Internet Options> Security> Trusted Sites>
Then UNCHECK the Enable Protected Mode option.

If this does not resolve your issue, we recommend that you go back to using Internet Explorer 7 or Firefox 3

We will be launching a new version of the image viewer next week. This may also help resolve the problem.

May?? *MAY* ?? !!

You mean you are going to launch a new version without knowing if it fixes any old problems... much less will create new ones?? !!!

How very typical of Ancestry!

Andy,

The number of problems with IE8 and Vista are many and very dependent on the security settings and add ons people have. We cannot test every configuration. We test the most common configurations and launch when those work.

We have been reading the various complaints and work to find resolutions.

The last time you improved the viewer, the rotate image functionality disappeared. Any more surprises in store since you will apparently spring this on an unsuspecting user base with little or no notice?

Now I'm curious...

Since you have over 800,00+ subscribers and lord knows how many non-subscribed users; just how do you determine what the most common configurations are.

Also, could you share these most common configurations so that those having trouble have the option of re-configuring their system to a more common configuration that works?

Oh, please don't mess me up. I've had no problems with , printing, saving, or load times and want to keep it that way. FireFox 3.0.5, no add-ons, & xp.

XP and firefox 3.0.5 is a pretty common combinatgion. Many who use Vista have found that IE7 or Firefox 3.x works well.

Your mileage may vary.

I personally use IE7 and Firefox 3.5 on my Vista machine and IE 7 and Firefox 3.5 on my XP machine. But that's one person, so not helpful.

There have been multiple posts from very helpful members who have posted solutions that work for them...worth reading for sure. Most of the problems seem to be with various configurations of IE8 and Vista.
