This is what a researcher told me:

The question has been raised about any potential Native American background. It would appear that the Bond’s may have been a mixed Native American family. Bond’s and Speller’s lived in close proximity and repeatedly married other. This is a cultural pattern that sets Native American families apart. Endogamy is a feature of Native American cultural life in post-contact years. It served to preserve the integrity of the community and its identity. It was an important means of cultural survival. However, this is in contrast to African American families where close marriage with relatives was considered highly immoral. By contrast white families sometimes married cousins as a tool for economic survival, helping to solidify wealth, particularly with regard to the passing on of land. Again further research would be needed to clarify this possibility. Potential tribal affiliation include the Meherrin, the Sapony, the Nottoway, the Cheraw, and the remnants of other Eastern Siouan or Algonquin tribes primarily, although some Iroquoian groups, such as the Tuscarora, did trade with them and travel through the area.
