Andrew, the Ann Wright I am looking for was Ann Garley born in 1852 in Little Harrowden, Northampton that married James Wright of Bringhurst, Leicestershire. They were living in Kettering, Northampton in the 1881 Census and had two of her siblings living with she, James and children.
Have you any information on these Wrights? Would appreciate any help.

Hi Cindy,

The real pain here is that Ancestry.co.uk isn't presenting the views of the census for Bringhurst 1871, and that means you can't just plod you way through the entire district.

Can I recommend investing in buying a copy of the birth certificate? from the public records office. James was born post 1837 so his birth will be registered.

I did that when trying to trace my great great grandparents, and it came up with the goods; father's name, mother's name and maiden name and usefully father's trade.

It opened up a fertile line of inquiry that was previously closed. Worth every penny of the seven quid it cost me!

Another point. The absence of a person from a place on a census does not mean they did not live there. They could have been somewhere else on that night (31/3/1871), and not everybody was discliplined about returning the details of overnight guests.

Andy, ordering a birth certificate is a great idea. I live in the United States and have not ever tried to get one from England. Can you tell me the how to achieve this? Can I use American money order to pay for it? Would appreciate your help.

Hi Cindy,

Yes, it's quite straightforward.

1. Get an account with www.1837online.co.uk, and use this site to trace your subjects registration. There is a charge for views of the record, but it is not large, and the information is invaluable. You are looking for the quarter in which the entry was made, and the district office where the birth was registered. It is likely to be Uppingham in Leicester.

2. Once you have this information visit the General Registry Office site at www.gro.gov.uk, and order a copy of the birth certificate.

Both sites give generous advice about research.

Good hunting

Andy

Hi Christine, looks like your tree may have some cross-over with mine.

Mine contains:

Henry Wright born 1841 Bringhurst, married Edith born 1840 also from Bringhurst.

Siblings, Thomas (b 1871), David (b 1874), Frederick (b 1880), Sarah Ann (b 1877), John (b 1863) and William (b 1866)

I then have this up to present day for Thomas’s line as he was my great grandfather.

Please let me know if this looks right ?
