Sorry, but I made a mistake on my last message. I should have said that Cyrus McCormick's parents were Robert McCormick and Mary Ann Hall.Robert McCormick and Martha Sanderson were his grandparents.

Have been trying to connect my James McCormick, gr,gr,gr grandfather, to brother of Robert McCormick, father of Cyrus. Was always told by my father that we were relation. James was born about 1762 in Ireland, settled in Pa. Married Sarah.

There are two James McCormicks in my line. The first is James McCormick b.1645 in Londonderry, Ulster, Ire. and died between 1676-1715. His wife was Sarah Welsh/Welch. They were married in 1693.Their son was Thomas McCormick (1702-1762) who came to PA in 1735.His wife was Elizabeth Carruth. Their son was Robert McCormick b.1738 in Lancaster Co. PA,d.1818 in Rockbridge Co. VA. His wife was Martha Sanderson. One of their sons was Robert who was the father of Cyrus McCormick. Another son was my gr.gr.gr.grandfather James McCormick b.1778 in Juniata Co. PA and d.1839 in West Millgrove,Wood Co. OH.He had three wives-Irene Rogers,Rachel Nisonger/Niswonger and Rachel Clark. If you think this could be the info you need I can give you more.

Susan- I forgot to mention in my last message that there is a website you can visit that has a very complete genealogy of the McCormick family beginning with Owen McCormick in Ireland in the 1500's. You can find it at www.familytreemaker.com/users/b/a/r/Debbie--R-Barnes/ODT1-00.... Also have you ever used the McCormick Family Forum on GenWeb? I have found it to be a great source and used it before I found this forum.

James and Robert McCormick

Thanks, Jane, but apparently my James is not the same as your two. The story that I was always told was that 3 brothers came from Ireland, one settled in Virginia, one in Pa, and the other one disappeared and was never heard from again. I tried to get back as far as I could before my dad died but could only get as far as Jonathan, my great-great grandfather. My daughter has now found that Jonathan's father was James, born 1762 in Ireland, married to Sarah in 1785, died in 1844 and buried in Allegheny Co. Pa. I'm going to check the other sights that you have shown me -- thanks. If you come up with something else, my e-mail is: suebob68@redoak.heartland.net. Thanks Again!!

My GGG Grandfather, James McCormick settled in West Tennessee in the 1830's and his parents were from North Carolina according to the census and verbal family history. Probably the Charlotte area (Mecklenburg Co.?)I am trying to find out who his parents were. Any info will be appreciated.

Hello, my name is Harold Virgil Godden. To answer your question about Robert McCormick being Cyrus's father or not. Yes, Robert is. Believe me I have done some heavy extensive research on the McCormick line in question. The reason for this is because my family has been told that My third great-grandmother Phoebe Elizabeth McCormick was his daughter, but I haven't been able to find the connection. She was born in Oskaloosa, Iowa in the 1840's

I just found your message tonight and it sounds so similar to the story I have been told. My gr-gr-gr grandfather was James McCormick, supposedly born in Ireland in about 1762. The story goes that he came over here with his two brothers, one settled in Virginia, one in PA ( mine ) and one disappeared and was never heard from again.
When I read your story - I couldn't believe it. But, James married a Sarah ( Cain? ) in 1785 in PA. He served with the Virginia Militia from 1781 - 1782. So, your dates don't match mine. Cyrus was the son of Robert. Robert did have a brother James but I cannot connect my James to that James. I was always told that we were related to Cyrus, but like I said - I can't make the connection. Good Luck! Sue Williams

Hi..

I was just browsing and came across this geneology site and found it interesting, I live in England but regularly travel to the US and have found that McCormick is more common in the US than back here in the UK.
can you identify the book you refer to in your message?..I'd be interested to obtain a copy.

thanks

Tim.

The book I refer to is "The McCormick Book" by Leander McCormick printed in 1896 and is out of print. You can get it through the Higgensons Book Company as they will gather a few requests and then do a special print for them. Its cost is roughly $200.00. Please e-mail me and I may be of some help to you with this matter. Also I would like to know about our family in England
