I have just started researching my geneology. I need help finding information on John Halliday born in 1785, Crossmichael, Scotland, who he was married to, father, mother, brothers, sisters. Any info. would be really helpful. He is the father of John Halliday born in 1812, Seven Dials, Holbork, England married to Catherine Lowe, 1834.

I have found 2 possible entries in my records for your John Halliday:

John Halliday born/baptised 31/10/1785 in Crossmichael Parish - parents John Halliday & Catherine Coutts

and

John Halliday born/baptised 13/11/1785 in Crossmichael Parish - parents John Halliday & Elisabeth McMin

So the question is - which John is yours? It could also be neither of them!

If you don't mind me asking - how do you know he was born 1785 in Crossmichael?

If the first couple I mentioned are his parents, then they had more children(John's siblings). If it is the second couple, then I can only find 1 record of children, and that is for John. Unfortunately the only records I have are for Kirkcudbrightshire, so whether they can be found in other counties, I do not know.

My Kirkcudbrightshire records consist of all Hallidays (all spelling variants) OPR Birth/Baptisms, OPR Marriages and SRI Deaths - it is just a list, and is not the actual documents.

Have you been to http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/ - you will find birth/marriage/death certificates there, if they exist.

03/02/2009 - i have walter miller born about 1833 in hawick,roxburgshire. Walter married Agnes jane halliday born 30 apr 1847 in dryfesdale,dumfrieshire, daughter of william halliday and janet irving. Their children are:
